In this short story by O'Henry, the two main characters - policeman Jimmy Wales and outlaw 'Silky' Bob - learn this lesson thoroughly. Once upon a time both were close like brothers. However, once Bob goes west to pursue his fate, the two eventually lose touch. Nevertheless, they promised to meet each other in an hour, in the 20 years since, after their last dinner together at the same location in New York City.

Twenty years later, Bob was waiting outside where the bar restaurant once stood when he and Jimmy parted ways; The latter, who is now a policeman, comes upon him while he is following his beat. Jimmy recognizes Bob after hearing Bob's story about friends vowing to reunite and seeing him light a cigar. He also learns that his old friend is a fugitive from Chicago, whom he had previously seen in a police bulletin. At the time, Bob didn't know that the policeman was Jimmy, who leaves the robber to wait for his friend and goes on his patrol.

After sometime another man comes. At first, Bob thinks he's Jimmy. Although Bob can't see the man very well in the dark, he begins to notice that some things are wrong about him. Eventually, the man reveals that it is a plainclothes officer who is arresting Bob. Before doing so, he hands Bob a note from the patrol, who turns out to be his former best friend and unfaithful, Jimmy.
