The 'Speech of Chief Seattle' is a heartfelt speech to the Governor of Washington State. The speech was widely publicized, arguing in favor of ecological responsibility and respect for the land rights of Native Americans. However what he said has actually been lost through translation and writing. The speech was published in the Seattle newspaper in 1887 by a pioneer who confirmed that he had heard it in 1854. Apart from this, no other records have been found.
Chief Seattle delivered a speech to mark the transfer of the ancestral Red Indians' lands to the federal government. He says the great chief in Washington sends wishes of friendship and goodwill and wishes to buy his land. This is a pity on their part as they have little need for their friendship in return as their people are stronger and more powerful than the original Redneck. Chief Seattle recalls a time when his men were large in number but are now reduced to a mournful memory. But he will not mourn their untimely loss. The youth are very aggressive and want to take revenge even at the cost of their lives but the old ones are intelligent and do not want to continue their hostile attitude towards them. This was the time when white people pushed their ancestors west. He wants George Washington, whom he calls his 'good father', to protect him. His valiant warriors will protect him from ancient enemies.
Then he is faced with a fear that the white people's god is not their god. He only loves his people. He solidifies the pale face and has abandoned his red children. He cannot love his red Indian children, so how can they be brothers? They appear to be orphans. Thus he says that they are two different races with different origins and different destinies. There is very little similarity between them.
He further remarks that the ashes of their ancestors are sacred and that their resting place is the land while the whites wander away from the graves of their ancestors. The religion of the white people was written on stone plates with the iron fingers of their god. But the religion of the Red Indians is the tradition of their ancestors. Then he says that his dead people stop loving him (white) but his (red men's) ancestors can never forget this beautiful world. They continue to love its lush green valleys, murmuring rivers, magnificent mountains, valleys, lakes and creeks.
He remarks that the Red Man has only ever escaped from the White Man's approach because the morning mist disappears before the morning sun. It seems that serious luck is following him and soon his caste will disappear. But then Seattle says they will look into the matter, and before accepting the president's offer, they made the condition that they would never be forbidden from visiting the graves of their ancestors, friends and children.
He concluded his speech by saying that when the last red man disappears from the earth, his memory will become a myth and the shores and forests will bear the fruits of his tribe. White people will never be alone. He urges white people to love and care for the land as they did with all their might, mind and heart, love and protect it as God loves and protects us. He believed that the death of his community was part of his world and said that there is no death but only the transformation of the world.
