The story is set in the countryside during the Spanish Civil War. An old man, wearing steel-rimmed glasses and dirty clothes, sits weary by the side of the road near a river-crossing pontoon bridge. Peasant refugees and Republican soldiers were fleeing the advancing fascist army. Cars, trucks, men, women and children were also crossing the bridge. The narrator who is crossing the bridge as part of his business to find out at which point the enemy has advanced, notices the old man as he crosses back. On interrogating him, he learns that the old man is from the city of San Carlos. He is so tired that he has walked just 12 kms from his hometown that he had to stop at the bridge. His duty is to take care of the animals left behind and he is more aware and concerned about their safety rather than his own. He is in charge of two goats, one cat and four pairs of pigeons. Unfortunately, he is forced to leave them behind. He says that the cat will take care of itself but does not know what will happen to the other animals.

The reporter suggests that he can catch a truck at the crossroads towards Barcelona but the old man explains that he does not know anyone there. The reporter seems unconvinced and thinks that soon the enemy will cross the bridge and the old man will meet his fate.
