The story is basically about a poor, sad and wretched child who becomes an angel for the Thompson family. A poor woman, whom almost everyone in the village hates for the rest of her life, is now surrounded by the same people when she dies in a state of intoxication on the threshold of her own home. She dies in front of her three children including two daughters and a son. The people of the village feel pity on these children. The boy was taken by a farmer and Katie was taken to Mrs. Alice. The youngest Maggie, who is handicapped and lying in bed, is left alone as no one is ready to take her in that condition. Mr. Thompson, Wheelwright, decides to take her home so that he can take her to the poor house the next day because he knows that his wife will not want him to stay at home forever or accept him. Joe begs him to tolerate Maggie in the future. When Mrs. Thompson is alone with Maggie all day when Jo leaves for work, her attitude towards Maggie changes and she slowly falls in love with him. Mr. Thompson notices this change and realizes that his home has long been dark, cold, and pathetic as his wife had nothing to love and care for, leading to his being irritable, moody and self-inflicted.
