The story begins with a clear picture of the poverty in which the protagonist Muni lives. Of the thirty houses in the village, only one big house is made of brick. Bamboo sheds, including those of the Muni, are made of straw, clay and other materials. There is no running water or electricity supply. The wife of the sage cooked food in an earthen pot on fire. One day the sage yanked six drumsticks from a tree growing in front of his house and asked his wife to prepare them in chutney for them. She agrees, provided she gets other ingredients like rice, pulses, spices, oil and potatoes. Muni was not so poor from the beginning. Once they had a herd of forty sheep and goats, which they grazed daily. But years of drought, famine and a pestilence had destroyed everything and he had only two goats left. And because he belongs to a lower caste, he was never allowed to go to school. He and his wife have no children to take care of them in their old age. He runs his house with the strange work that his wife does in the big house. Muni has taken so much credit from every shop that when he asks for his wife's necessary ingredients for cooking drumsticks, she is refused. There is nothing to cook in the house so his wife tells him to fast till evening and feed the goats. The sages go to their usual place on the outskirts where they used to sit on the pedestal of the old horse statue and their goats wandered. The horse statue is made of clay and is brightly colored.
As Muni waits for the evening, he sees a yellow wagon, from which a red-faced American dressed in khaki descends and asks him to the nearest gas station. Then he looks at the idol and says 'amazing'. Muni mistakes him as a policeman or a soldier and he wants to run but finds it difficult due to his old age. Both start talking in their own language without understanding each other. The American offers him a cigarette and then gives him his business card which the muni thinks of for a warrant card. He gives an innocent explanation that he knows nothing about the crime the man is investigating. The American expressed a desire to buy the horse statue because he thinks that the sage is the owner. Both talk about their respective lives. The sage told him about the idol that his father and grandfather had told him. The American listens with charm and appreciates his voice. The sage told him that he never went to school and in those days only Brahmins went to school, therefore, he did not know the foreign language. He further describes the horse as his patron. To this the American replies that he assures that the statue will have a U.S.A. I would have the best house.
In this way, they continued the conversation, trying to understand each other's language. Finally the American waved the hundred rupee note and handed it over to the muni. The muni thinks that this is a proposal for the goats. He happily runs back home, leaving behind his goats. But his wife suspects him of theft and threatens to leave him. The American, on the other hand, finds it helpful to separate the horse from its seat and place it in its station wagon.
