सरल लेकिन शक्तिशाली यह कविता 'अपने पूर्वाग्रहों को अपने निर्णयों को नियंत्रित करने' के परिणामों के बारे में है। यह कड़ाके की ठंड के मौसम में संयोग से फंसे छह लोगों के साथ खुलता है और प्रत्येक के पास लकड़ी की एक छड़ी होती है। जो आग उन्हें गर्म कर रही है वह कभी भी मरने वाली है लेकिन कोई भी अपने लॉग को इस्तेमाल करने के लिए तैयार नहीं है। लोगों के पास इसके अलग-अलग कारण हैं। शुरुआत उस महिला से हुई जो समूह में किसी अश्वेत व्यक्ति को बचाना नहीं चाहती थी। अगले आदमी ने देखा कि एक व्यक्ति अपने धर्म का नहीं है। तीसरा, लत्ता पहने हुए गरीब, अमीरों से ईर्ष्या करता था। धनी व्यक्ति अपात्र निर्धनों को कुछ भी नहीं देना चाहता था। काले आदमी ने सोचा कि यह गोरे लोगों से बदला लेने का मौका है और आखिरी आदमी स्वार्थ से भरा था जो बदले में कुछ फायदेमंद होने पर ही मदद करेगा।

अंत में, ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि जिन लाठियों को वे सभी अपने हाथों में कसकर पकड़े हुए थे, वे प्रतिशोध और घृणा के प्रतीक के रूप में खड़ी थीं। उनमें मानवता की आभा का अभाव था। स्वार्थी आत्माओं ने मृत्यु को आमंत्रित किया और वे अपने हृदय की शीतलता से मर गए।

Simple but powerful, this poem is about the consequences of 'letting your prejudices control your decisions'. It opens with six people accidentally trapped in cold weather and each carrying a wooden stick. The fire that is heating them is ever going to die but no one is ready to put their logs to use. People have different reasons for this. It started with a woman who didn't want to save any black man in the group. The next man saw that a person was not of his religion. Third, the poor, wearing rags, were jealous of the rich. The rich man did not want to give anything to the ineligible poor. The black man thought it was his chance to take revenge on the white people and the last man was full of selfishness which would only help if something beneficial was done in return.

In the end, it appears that the sticks they were all holding tightly in their hands stood as symbols of vengeance and hatred. He lacked the aura of humanity. Selfish souls invited death and they died from the coldness of their hearts.
