One evening he goes to eat at a crowded restaurant and when he has to pay the eleven annas bill, he discovers that the purse containing his life's savings of fourteen rupees is missing. But, the restaurant owner thinks the speaker is trying to deceive him, and threatens to take his eyes out. The other people in the restaurant seem to have no pity either. The speaker requests the owner to keep his coat safe. But, the owner falls silent and removes his coat, shirt and shoes from the speaker. When he wants the speaker to remove the trousers as well, the speaker pleads with him for mercy saying that there is nothing inside him. This only calls for more laughter and the restaurant owner, along with fifty others, forces the speaker to strip more, jokingly saying, "There must be something inside."

The speaker, now resigned to his fate, begins to unbutton his trousers, imagining himself all the time standing naked in front of others, his eyes bandaged. It is at this point that a blue-eyed, fair-skinned, six-foot man in a red turban and white trousers intervenes and offers to pay the owner the amount due. He asks the speaker to accompany him and when the grateful speaker asks for his name, he says he has no name. When the speaker says that 'Daya' should be his name, he does not react and goes on until they reach a deserted bridge. There, after making sure no one is around, the stranger takes out five wallets and asks the speaker which of them are. He warns the speaker to leave without turning back and says that the speaker should not admit to anyone that he has seen the man. He gives the wallet, which the speaker has identified as himself, with the money, and leaves the place that the speaker be helped by God. The speaker, on his part, hopes that God will help the stranger.

 

It is clear that the person helping the speaker is actually a pick-pocket who stole four other wallets apart from the speaker's purse. Although the speaker is grateful to the person, the situation raises a number of ethical questions. Do we take pick-pocketing as someone with a kind heart? Following a line of reasoning, we can say that he definitely is. Otherwise, they would not have helped the speaker. If he were completely hard-hearted, he might have enjoyed seeing the speaker's disgrace, knowing full well that the speaker was telling the truth. Another thing that goes in his favor is that the money he pays in the restaurant is not from the speaker's fourteen rupees. In fact, he asks the speaker to count his money and ensure that the amount is not touched.
