'Money Madness' by DH Lawrence is a powerful argument against the weakness of money. Lawrence begins by saying that madness for money is collective. With this, he establishes the fact that madness for money is widespread and pervasive. But Lawrence is quick to add that a person does not break free from guilt because this madness is omnipresent. He has to accept his share of madness because collective madness is possible only when individual madness comes into existence. Thus the poet states that money is the madness shared by everyone in the world. If the whole world is mad, then every person keeps madness around him.

The poet is afraid of society. If a man becomes so consumed with money, he forgets what else is important in the world. Financial matters are tense. Often, society judges a person by his wealth. If he is poor, society expects him to eat dirt or ask for bread. Lawrence emphasizes that the world has become preoccupied with money and the ways in which one can obtain wealth. To give so much importance to money is madness which can be lost in the blink of an eye. People don't like to share their money. The bigger the amount, the more painful it is to give it. Man bows before the god of wealth - Money can put a person under stress. Man has the right to consume money. It is collective or shared wealth that is most frightening. The narrator hopes that if he has no money, mankind will give him bread so that he can live. But he also knows that people will feed him bread as well as soil.

This fear of 'money hungry fellow' can confuse a person. To summarize his point, Lawrence vowed that people should not beg for food to eat. Food, shelter and fire should be free for all. Before we start beating each other over this, mankind must regain its composure regarding the financial aspect of life.
