This poem is by TS Eliot. The poem is about the feelings of a soldier who survives in battle. At the end the poet remembers the Indian soldiers who died in the war in South Africa and says that they are buried there so it is now their homeland.

Wherever a man is, there is a place he wants to be and that place is his home, his place of birth. He yearns for his home and stove for the food cooked by his wife. He wants to enjoy the sunset peacefully at his doorstep and watch his grandchildren play in the dust with their neighbour's grandchildren. These feelings are those of a soldier after the war is over.

At the end of his career the soldier fortunately survived the battle despite receiving many marks on the battlefield. He has memories of foreign soldiers he met during the war and what their battles were like away from their homeland. These memories come to him while talking to people.

A soldier is not destined to live in his native land or die there. His fate may take him away from his native place to a foreign land. If a country is the home of one person, it is the exile of another. The country where a soldier dies while fighting becomes his homeland, while his own country becomes a foreign land.

Addressing the dead Indian soldier, the poet states that Africa, where he and the other soldiers had come to fight, belonged to none of them, but that Africa was their origin when they died in the soil of Africa fighting for their homeland. Or became the motherland.
