Alice approaches a large table set under a tree outside the March Hare's house and arrives with the Mad Hatter and the March Hare tea. They rest their elbows on the sleeping dormouse that sits between them. They tell Alice that there is no room for her at the table, but Alice sits there anyway. March offers Hare Alice wines, but there is none. Alice tells the March Hare that her conduct is rude, to which he recounts that it was rude of her to sit without being invited. The Mad Hatter enters the conversation, saying that Alice's hair 'wants to be cut.' Alice condemns his rudeness, but he ignores her scolding and responds with a riddle: 'Why is a raven like a writing desk?' Alice attempts to answer the riddle, which begins a major argument about semantics. After their argument, the Tea Party remains silent until the Mad Hatter asks March Hare for time. When he learns that the March Hare's clock, which measures the day of the month, has been broken, the Mad Hatter is furious. When the March Hare is spreading butter on him, he blames the March Hare for icing on the clock. The March Hare sadly dipped the watch in his tea, saying that 'it was the best butter.'

Alice gives up on the riddle and becomes angry with the Mad Hatter when she learns she doesn't even know the answer. She tells him that he should not waste time asking riddles that have no answer. The Mad Hatter calmly explains that time is a 'he', not a 'it'. He recounts how time has been troubled ever since the Queen of Hearts said that the Mad Hatter was 'killing time' even though he badly performed a song. Since then, the time has been fixed at six o'clock, which means they are always present at tea time. Tired of this line of conversation, the March Hare says he wants to hear a story, so he wakes the dormouse. Dormouse tells a story about three sisters who live, eat and draw jaggery in a well. Confused by the story, Alice intervenes with so many questions that the dormouse is humiliated. Alice continues to ask questions until the Mad Hatter insults her and is filled with disgust. As she walks by, she sees the Mad Hatter and the March Hare as they attempt to stuff the dormouse into a teapot.

In the woods, Alice encounters a tree that has a door. She enters the door and finds herself back in the great hall. Alice goes back to the table with the key and uses the mushroom to grow to the size she can reach the key, then to shrink back to the size she can fit through the door. She goes through the door and finally comes across the garden path.
