The story of The Prize Poem is primarily about the selection of the best of the poems by members of the Sixth Form of St. Austin College. The award is given at the annual function to the winner of the best poem. This contest is necessitated by a will left by a certain wealthy person before his death.
A rich and unlucky (mankind hater) man had a plan to perpetuate his memory after his death. Therefore, he left a will in which he reserved a part of his personal income to be spent on the annual award given to the author of the best poem. The condition was that the poem was to be written by members of the Sixth Form of St. Austin College. This convention was preserved for a period of twenty-seven years. The story tells of how this practice was abandoned.

As usual, like every year, the headmaster announces the annual competition with the theme 'An Ode to the College'. Three members Smith, Montgomery and Morrison submitted their poems for the competition. The way he captured the poem is very interesting and amusing. Smith visited
Reynolds of the Remove at One Remove brought changes to compulsory competition. Reynolds was recovering after a German measles attack. His friend Smith visited him in the hospital. Smith told Reynolds about the theme of the award poem 'An Ode to the College'. Reynolds, who had made several fruitless attempts at publishing the verses, immediately joined the venture.
Reynolds sat down to write poetry. He wrote the first four lines on a piece of paper and then four lines. But soon surpassed them. He cloned the first four lines into another paper. He re-copied the lines he had written, with minor changes on the third paper titled 'An Ode to the College'.
Soon Mrs. Lee, in charge of the infirmary, came to Reynolds with tea. When she entered it widened and the papers flew in the wind and fell on the grass outside. He disregarded Spandan and did not take back the papers as he remembered all that he had written. Later, in the afternoon, Montgomery, another sixth-form student, found a paper in which Reynolds wrote his poem. He was excited and used it for the contest by adding some of his lines.
Two days later, a friend of Evans Morrison found Reynolds' second sheet of paper from the field. She happily gave it to Morrison, who had previously asked for such help. Morrison also chose to use the lines for the contest. The following Sunday, Smith visited Reynolds and admitted that he could only write four lines but that they would be enough to submit the entry.
All entries for the contest were sent to Mr Wells for evaluation. He wrote in his letter that only Rogers' entry was good and that it was funny enough that the three other boys' entries had the same four lines.
The headmaster called the three boys involved. From his claim, he concluded that each got four rows separately. He said that he sought this unjust method because entry into the competition was mandatory and he could not write poems at all. The headmaster then accomplished the difficult task of stopping this convention of the prize poetry competition for St. Austin College's Sixth Form by making the condition voluntary.
