The text is a quote from the childhood days of famous leading artists of India. This lesson is studied under the unit - Enabling the Handicapped. Readers get encouragement from the protagonist of the text, Satish Gujral. This is the real incident. The present prose proves that physical disability is not a hindrance to success. Satish was eight years old, he did not go to school one day. His friend Surendra came to meet him and asked the reason for his absence.

Poor Satish was lying on the bed, Surendra did not hear him even after calling him thrice. After this, Satish replied that his health was not well. Surrender, more concerned, asked again what was the cause of his illness. Satish did not know the reason why he had a terrible headache and felt that everything was getting dark and silent. He asked Surendra why he speaks so slowly. Surrender got a strange look and thought that Satish might have a hearing loss.

Last year, Satish had gone to Kashmir with his brother and father on vacation. There he had an accident. When he cried while walking with his father and brother, they wanted to cross a weak bridge. Both stood on the bridge and saw the water flowing below. Satish pointed to his brother at one place, when his foot slipped and he fell into the dangerous part of the river after losing his balance. When he regained consciousness, his leg hurt. He also got hit in the head, he was injured and badly hurt all around.

He had several operations and his legs recovered but he remained weak. After that, he was often ill and had ear infections. Satish was moaning in pain. Surender got up and asked if he would come to school the next day. Satish nodded and Surendra left. Satish was aggrieved and felt that some heavy burden was falling on his head, making everything distant and silent. He was troubled and helpless. A slow tear dropped drop by drop on his cheek. He felt the silence at its worst as he was confined to the bed. He wanted to scream to break the silence but he could not. Everything looked like scenes from a theatrical show.

It was terrible for an eight-year-old. According to the doctor, all this happened because of the side effect of the medicine given at the time of treatment for his feet. Doctors did not diagnose the exact cause. Due to his illness, he was irregular in his school and had hearing problems. So the school administration could not keep Satish in their school. His father decided to look for a new school for him. But Satish did not want to go to the new school as he was not able to talk to the new kids and was afraid that they would make fun of his deafness. But there was no other way, his father tried hard to convince him, finally he agreed to join the school.

He had to face the same situation in the new school also. The headmaster said that the school was for normal boys, why didn't they take him to the school for the deaf and dumb? Satish's father Avtar Narayan got angry and said that his son is not dumb. Satish was rejected by almost all the schools. After this Satish became quite moody. He could not speak freely, at this stage he did not hear a single word.

His elder brother Inder stayed with him for hours and sat beside him. He talked, taught and tried to learn the pronunciation of words. Satish did not go to play with his neighbors as he was unable to tease their talent and other children. His mind was very delicate, and very sensitive too. His father and his brother spent their time with him and taught him many things. His father brought many books to read and said that he could learn a lot from reading books. From that day onwards he read many books. A whole world opened up to him after reading it. He became an avid reader. He read The Life of Garibaldi, the works of Munshi Premchand, Sarat Chandra, and many others. Reading made him feel sad and left a deep impression on his sensitive mind. He knew another world of misery and trouble, while his own world seemed comfortable in comparison.

After a few days, Satish hit again and lay on the bed. At this stage, he could sit, look out the window or read books. One day he saw a rare bird that was flying here and there. It had a long tail and black crest. It had restless energy and to take flight at any moment. He was attracted by the bird and made a picture of the bird from his memory. He liked his sketch and placed it on a stack of books by his bed. He explored his past by filling the pages with pictures and patterns of his thinking. He was good at Urdu writing and sketching came naturally.

But his father thought it was a useless pastime. Instead, it was better to read books. Satish was refused to stop drawing, though his father opposed it. His mother told his father why he took away her son's means of entertainment.

His father was worried about his future. How can he live his life as an artist? Artists had little income and their hearing could return at any time and they had to study to do something for their lives. Mother asked how it was possible that he could recover his hearing. He was ill for 3 years. he lost his hope but his father didn't lose his hope

E. His father asked why he should decide that he would be deaf for the rest of his life, instead of what he should be optimistic about and gently rebuked his wife.

Despite several visits to the doctors, his condition was not improving. He remained in his silent world. The only comfort of his life was painting. His father was opposed but he managed to paint and draw. One day his father saw his son's talent and decided to encourage him. He asked his son about his painting, to Satish's surprise that his father was not angry with him. After a few hours, the father brought paints, brushes, drawing sheets, etc. and carefully placed them on his desk. Satish came and hugged his father lovingly. His father said that those things are for him. His father found the best school in the arts and his son built his life in his own way.

In the end, Satish's father accepted his son's desire to become an artist. Satish learned more than painting in that school and also learned about life. The boy, now known as Satish Gujral. He was one of the few artists who were famous for painting, sculpture and architecture. He was also an author. His works were exhibited in prestigious museums like Museum of Modern Art, New York, Hiroshima Collection. Washington and National Gallery of Modem Art, New Delhi. He had published four books of his works in different arts. He was awarded the Order of the Crown for the best architectural design of the 20th century for his design of the Belgian Embassy in New Delhi. He was awarded the "Padma Vibhushan". He was a good example that even the handicapped can achieve the best. Disability was no barrier to success.
