One day Swami's father was reading a newspaper sitting under the hall lamp. When Swami came to him, he read the news of the bravery of a village boy, who was returning home through the forest. Then the boy came face to face with a tiger. But he wasn't scared. Instead, he climbed a tree and stayed on it for half a day. In the end some people came by that road and killed the tiger. Swami then told his father that a boy cannot fight a tiger. His father said that courage is everything; Strength and age don't matter much. Swami's father asked Swami to prove his courage by sleeping alone in his office room that night. Swami could not sleep alone. He always slept on the porch next to his grandmother. If he did not sleep with his grandmother, he would tremble and stay awake all night. So he requested his father to allow him to do so from the first of the next month. But his father did not agree. When Swami was sleeping with his maternal grandmother as usual, his father came and woke him. Then he took her to his office room and ordered her to sleep alone on a bench in the room. He put out the lights, but left the door open and went outside. Swami was alone. he was scared.

Swami spread his bed under the bench and bowed down there. Soon he fell asleep. He dreamed that a tiger was following him. Swami tried to open his eyes but failed. So he groaned in despair.

Suddenly Swami heard a little rustle in the dark. Swami was afraid that some devil was coming. But it was nothing but a thief who entered the office room as soon as the door was opened. The thief came very close to him. Swami immediately grabbed his leg and ditched his teeth.

Then the thief raised an alarm that something had bitten his leg. Everyone in the house was woken up by a loud sound. Father and a servant came running with a light. Both caught the thief. Later the police caught the thief.

The next day Swami's classmates praised him. His teacher patted him for his courage and bravery. The headmaster said that Swami had slit the knee of a notorious house breaker and the police was grateful to him. ,

When the father returned home that night, Swami was seen sleeping next to his maternal grandmother, instead of sleeping alone in the office room. His mother stopped his father from waking him.

एक दिन स्वामी के पिता हॉल लैम्प के नीचे बैठकर अखबार पढ़ रहे थे। जब स्वामी उनके पास आए, तो उन्होंने एक गांव के लड़के की बहादुरी की खबर पढ़ी, जो जंगल के रास्ते से घर लौट रहा था। तभी बालक का एक बाघ से आमना-सामना हो गया। लेकिन वह डरा नहीं। इसके बजाय, वह एक पेड़ पर चढ़ गया और आधे दिन तक उस पर रहा। अंत में कुछ लोगों ने उस रास्ते से आकर बाघ को मार डाला। तब स्वामी ने अपने पिता से कहा कि एक लड़का बाघ से नहीं लड़ सकता। उनके पिता ने कहा कि साहस ही सब कुछ है; ताकत और उम्र ज्यादा मायने नहीं रखती। स्वामी के पिता ने स्वामी से उस रात अपने कार्यालय कक्ष में अकेले सो कर अपनी हिम्मत साबित करने के लिए कहा। स्वामी अकेले नहीं सो सके। वह हमेशा पोर्च में अपनी नानी के पास ही सोता था। अगर वह अपनी नानी के पास नहीं सोता तो वह पूरी रात कांपता और जागता रहता। इसलिए उसने अपने पिता से अनुरोध किया कि वह अगले महीने की पहली तारीख से उसे ऐसा करने दे। लेकिन उसके पिता नहीं माने। जब स्वामी हमेशा की तरह अपनी नानी के पास सो रहे थे, तो उनके पिता ने आकर उन्हें जगाया। फिर वह उसे अपने कार्यालय के कमरे में ले गया और उसे कमरे में एक बेंच पर अकेले सोने का आदेश दिया। उसने बत्तियाँ बुझा दीं, लेकिन दरवाज़ा खुला छोड़ कर बाहर चला गया। स्वामी अकेला था। वह डरा हुआ था।

स्वामी ने अपना बिस्तर बेंच के नीचे फैला दिया और वहीं झुक गए। जल्द ही वह सो गया। उसने सपना देखा कि एक बाघ उसका पीछा कर रहा है। स्वामी ने आंखें खोलने की कोशिश की लेकिन असफल रहे। इसलिए वह निराशा से कराह उठा।

अचानक स्वामी ने अंधेरे में थोड़ी सी सरसराहट की आवाज सुनी। स्वामी को डर था कि कोई शैतान आ रहा है। लेकिन यह और कुछ नहीं बल्कि एक चोर था जो दरवाजा खुला रखते ही ऑफिस के कमरे में घुस गया। चोर उसके बहुत करीब आ गया। स्वामी ने तुरंत अपना पैर पकड़ लिया और अपने दाँत खोदे।

तभी चोर ने शोर मचाया कि उसके पैर में किसी चीज ने काट लिया है। तेज आवाज से घर के सभी लोग जाग गए। पिता और एक नौकर बत्ती लेकर दौड़ते हुए आए। दोनों ने चोर को पकड़ लिया। बाद में पुलिस ने चोर को पकड़ लिया।

अगले दिन स्वामी के सहपाठियों ने उसकी प्रशंसा की। उनके शिक्षक ने उनके साहस और बहादुरी के लिए उन्हें थपथपाया। प्रधानाध्यापक ने कहा कि स्वामी ने एक कुख्यात घर तोड़ने वाले के घुटने में काट लिया था और पुलिस उसकी आभारी है। ,

उस रात जब पिता घर लौटे, तो स्वामी कार्यालय के कमरे में अकेले सोने के बजाय, अपनी नानी के पास सोते हुए देखे गए। उसकी माँ ने उसके पिता को उसे जगाने से रोक दिया।
