'The Cat and the Pain-Killer' is one of the episodes of the novel 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer'. Tom Sawyer is a mischievous teenager growing up on the Mississippi River with his aunt Polly and brother Sid. He faces all sorts of pranks, but somehow escapes punishment. Although school life is miserable, Becky Thatcher's visit makes him happy. That happiness will not last long as Becky gets sick and stops coming to school.

At home, his aunt notices that Tom is disturbed and uninterested in doing anything. So Aunt Polly, who has a passion for patent drugs, tries them on Tom. She tries all sorts of treatments to make Tom happy again, but to no avail. Exhausted by Aunt Polly's treatment, Tom says he needs painkillers. Aunt Polly notices that the drugs are dwindling, even though she does not know that Tom is using them to repair cracks in the floor of the living room.

One day while Tom is repairing the crack with painkiller, cat Peter comes and begs to taste the medicine. Pitying the cat, Tom gives him a spoonful to taste, in which Peter jumps up and dances in the air, disturbing the furniture and flowerpots. Aunt Polly hears strange noises as she watches the cat summer and carry some flowerpots out the window. The old woman is shocked to see all the confusion and Tom's uncontrollable laughter. Polly questions Aunt Tom about the cat's behavior. Tom replied that cats act like this when they have fun.

Aunt Polly finds the teaspoon and understands that Tom fed the medicine to the cat. She scolds him for behaving so cruelly towards the cat, to which he replies that the cat does not have an aunt like her, and pity the cat and give him the medicine.
