On Sunday Nanaji, Naina and Ajit started very early on their 'picnic'. They took the first train to the village 'Himapet'.

Two and half hours later they found themselves at a tiny, dusty railway station. They got down and stepped outside. A large well built man wearing a white dhoti and kurta and sporting a huge turban there was a platform. They sat down and Nanaji started his story.

Around ten years ago there was a young man whose name was Akash. He was studying to be a Doctor. After he completed his MBBS he worked hard and won a scholarship to USA. He got his masters degree and decided to come back. Along with him ten of his friends had also gone for higher studies to America. They all stayed back but Akash returned. Akash's father was not very happy with is son's decision. He was very proud that his son had got a foreign degree. He wanted his son to make America his home, earn a lot of money and finally invite his parents and sister also to settle down in America. But Akash was adamant. 'My country has spent thousands of rupees in educating me. I have to repay this debt. The only way I can do it is by serving the people here. And moreover India and its villages need good doctors far more than rich countries like America.'

'What happened Nanaji? Did Akash come back to India?'

'Yes, child he did. In the beginning he worked in a Government Hospital in the city. A year later an epidemic broke out in the nearby villages. When Akash learnt about that he just packed his bags and left. He didn't even inform his parents.'

'Why?' asked Ajit.

'Because they would have stopped him, silly. In science I have studied that during epidemics, sometimes the doctors who are treating the patients also die,' Naina said.

'Yes, Naina is right. Anyway, a week later Akash's father got a postcard from him saying that he was busy treating the patients and that the situation was very grim. But Akash did not mention where exactly he was, fearing that his father would land up and try to drag him back. Two weeks later his father received a phone call saying that Akash had been admitted in the City hospital in a serious condition.

His parents rushed to see him. He was in a very bad state. He could barely speak.

'Why are you torturing yourself, as well as us, son?' His father asked him while his mother started sobbing.

'I.. can't help it father. I can't bear to see people suffer.

'Your friends are enjoying life in America, earning pots of money and living in comfort and look at you here - fighting for your life. I can't understand what you are getting get by doing all this. If you don't care about yourself atleast spare a thought for your poor mother. Just see her condition. She has gone half mad worrying abut you.'

'Father I don't think I'll ever be able to convince you about my actions. All I can say is that I have the satisfaction that I have been able to save so many lives. Forgive me if I have tortured you. But...but please try to understand that I could not help it. I can't watch people

रविवार को नानाजी, नैना और अजीत अपनी 'पिकनिक' पर बहुत जल्दी निकल पड़े। उन्होंने पहली ट्रेन 'हिमापेट' गांव के लिए पकड़ी।

ढाई घंटे बाद उन्होंने खुद को एक छोटे, धूल भरे रेलवे स्टेशन पर पाया। वे नीचे उतरे और बाहर निकल गये। एक मंच पर सफेद धोती और कुर्ता पहने और बड़ी पगड़ी पहने एक बड़ा कद काठी का आदमी था। वे बैठ गए और नानाजी ने अपनी कहानी शुरू की।

करीब दस साल पहले एक युवक था जिसका नाम आकाश था। वह डॉक्टर बनने के लिए पढ़ाई कर रहा था। एमबीबीएस की पढ़ाई पूरी करने के बाद उन्होंने कड़ी मेहनत की और यूएसए में छात्रवृत्ति हासिल की। उन्होंने अपनी मास्टर डिग्री प्राप्त की और वापस आने का फैसला किया। उनके साथ उनके दस दोस्त भी उच्च शिक्षा के लिए अमेरिका गये थे। वे सभी वहीं रुक गए लेकिन आकाश वापस लौट आया। आकाश के पिता अपने बेटे के फैसले से बहुत खुश नहीं थे. उन्हें इस बात पर बहुत गर्व था कि उनके बेटे को विदेशी डिग्री मिली है। वह चाहते थे कि उनका बेटा अमेरिका को अपना घर बनाए, खूब सारा पैसा कमाए और अंत में अपने माता-पिता और बहन को भी अमेरिका में बसने के लिए आमंत्रित करे। लेकिन आकाश जिद पर अड़े थे. 'मेरे देश ने मुझे शिक्षित करने में हजारों रुपये खर्च किए हैं। मुझे ये कर्ज चुकाना है. ऐसा करने का एकमात्र तरीका यहां के लोगों की सेवा करना है। और तो और भारत और उसके गांवों को अमेरिका जैसे अमीर देशों की तुलना में कहीं ज्यादा अच्छे डॉक्टरों की जरूरत है।'

'क्या हुआ नानाजी? क्या आकाश भारत वापस आ गया?'

'हाँ, बच्चा, उसने किया। शुरुआत में उन्होंने शहर के एक सरकारी अस्पताल में काम किया। एक साल बाद आस-पास के गाँवों में महामारी फैल गई। जब आकाश को इस बारे में पता चला तो उसने अपना बैग पैक किया और चला गया। उसने अपने माता-पिता को भी सूचित नहीं किया।'

'क्यों?' अजित ने पूछा।

'क्योंकि उन्होंने उसे रोक लिया होता, मूर्ख। नैना ने कहा, 'विज्ञान में मैंने अध्ययन किया है कि महामारी के दौरान कभी-कभी मरीजों का इलाज करने वाले डॉक्टरों की भी मौत हो जाती है।'

'हां, नैना सही कह रही है। वैसे भी, एक हफ्ते बाद आकाश के पिता को एक पोस्टकार्ड मिला जिसमें लिखा था कि वह मरीजों के इलाज में व्यस्त हैं और स्थिति बहुत गंभीर है। लेकिन आकाश ने यह नहीं बताया कि वह वास्तव में कहाँ था, उसे डर था कि उसके पिता आएँगे और उसे वापस खींचने की कोशिश करेंगे। दो हफ्ते बाद उसके पिता को फोन आया कि आकाश को गंभीर हालत में शहर के अस्पताल में भर्ती कराया गया है।

उसके माता-पिता उसे देखने के लिए दौड़ पड़े। वह बहुत बुरी हालत में था. उसके मुंह से मुश्किल से बोली निकलती थी।

'तुम अपने साथ-साथ हमें भी क्यों सता रहे हो बेटा?' उसके पिता ने उससे पूछा तो उसकी माँ रोने लगी।

'मैं... इसमें कुछ नहीं कर सकता पिताजी। मैं लोगों को पीड़ित होते हुए नहीं देख सकता।

'आपके दोस्त अमेरिका में जीवन का आनंद ले रहे हैं, ढेर सारा पैसा कमा रहे हैं और आराम से रह रहे हैं और यहां आपको देख रहे हैं - अपने जीवन के लिए लड़ रहे हैं। मुझे समझ नहीं आ रहा कि ये सब करके तुम्हें क्या मिल रहा है. यदि तुम्हें अपनी परवाह नहीं है तो कम से कम अपनी गरीब माँ के बारे में तो सोचो। जरा उसकी हालत तो देखो. वह तुम्हारी चिंता में आधी पागल हो गई है।'

'पिताजी, मुझे नहीं लगता कि मैं कभी आपको अपने कार्यों के बारे में आश्वस्त कर पाऊंगा। मैं बस इतना कह सकता हूं कि मुझे संतुष्टि है कि मैं इतने सारे लोगों की जान बचाने में सफल रहा हूं।' यदि मैंने तुम्हें कष्ट दिया हो तो मुझे क्षमा कर दो। लेकिन...लेकिन कृपया यह समझने की कोशिश करें कि मैं इसमें कुछ नहीं कर सकता। मैं लोगों पर नज़र नहीं रख सकता
