प्रसिद्ध कवि थॉमस गिस्बोर्न द्वारा लिखित 'द वर्म'। इस कविता में कीड़ों ने बहुत महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई है। इस कविता में कवि ने कहा है कि हम आमतौर पर कीड़ों की परवाह नहीं करते हैं। कभी-कभी जाने-अनजाने हम उन छोटे जीवों को मार देते हैं। खासकर जब हम जल्दी में होते हैं तो हमें परवाह नहीं होती कि हम क्या कदम उठा रहे हैं। गलती से हम कुछ कीड़ों को मार सकते हैं। इसके लिए कवि ने उन छोटे, उपेक्षित और असहाय जीवों जैसे कीड़ों को अपनी अनियंत्रित हरकतों से सील न करने की अपील की। कवि यह भी कहता है कि जिस ईश्वर ने हमें बनाया है, उसने भी छोटे-छोटे जीव बनाए हैं। जैसे हमारा प्रभु हम से प्रेम करता है, वैसे ही वह अपने अन्य प्राणियों से भी प्रेम करता है। अगर हम उन छोटे जानवरों को मार देंगे, तो अल्लाह को निश्चित रूप से दुख होगा। अपने प्राणियों के लिए अल्लाह के प्रेम और असीम प्रेम को दिखाने के लिए, उसने उनके आराम के लिए सूर्य, चंद्रमा और सितारों का निर्माण किया। जब हम उन जानवरों को मारते हैं, तो हमें उनकी जान लेने का कोई अधिकार नहीं है क्योंकि हम उन्हें उनकी जान वापस नहीं दे सकते। इन जानवरों को जीवित रहने के लिए कुछ ही दिन मिलते हैं। इसलिए, हमें उन्हें अपने जीवन का आनंद लेने देना चाहिए और उन्हें स्वतंत्रता देनी चाहिए ताकि वे अपने जीवन का आनंद ले सकें जैसे हम इसका आनंद लेते हैं।

थॉमस गिस्बोर्न नावाच्या प्रसिद्ध कवीने लिहिलेले ‘द वर्म’. या कवितेत वर्म्सने खूप महत्त्वाची भूमिका बजावली आहे. या कवितेतील कवीने सांगितले की आपण सहसा कीटकांची पर्वा करत नाही. कधी-कधी जाणूनबुजून किंवा नकळत आपण त्या चिमुकल्या प्राण्यांना मारतो. विशेषत: जेव्हा आपण घाईत असतो तेव्हा आपण काय पाऊल टाकत आहोत याची आपल्याला पर्वा नसते. चुकून, आपण काही किडे मारू शकतो. यासाठी कवीने आपल्या अनियंत्रित हालचालींद्वारे त्या लहान, दुर्लक्षित आणि असहाय्य जीवांना किड्यांसारखे मोहरून टाकू नका, असे आवाहन केले. कवीने असेही म्हटले आहे की, ज्या परमेश्वराने आपल्याला निर्माण केले त्याने लहान जीव देखील निर्माण केले आहेत. आपला प्रभू आपल्यावर जसे प्रेम करतो, त्याचप्रमाणे तो त्याच्या इतर प्राण्यांवरही प्रेम करतो. जर आपण त्या लहान प्राण्यांना मारले तर अल्लाहला नक्कीच दुखापत होईल. अल्लाहचे त्याच्या प्राण्यांवर प्रेम आणि अमर्याद प्रेम दर्शविण्यासाठी, त्याने त्यांच्या आरामासाठी सूर्य, चंद्र आणि तारे निर्माण केले. जेव्हा आपण त्या प्राण्यांना मारतो तेव्हा आपल्याला त्यांचा जीव घेण्याचा अधिकार नाही कारण आपण त्यांना त्यांचे जीवन परत देऊ शकत नाही. या प्राण्यांना जगण्यासाठी काही दिवसच मिळतात. म्हणून, आपण त्यांच्या जीवनाचा आनंद घेऊ दिला पाहिजे आणि त्यांना स्वातंत्र्य दिले पाहिजे जेणेकरुन आपण जसे आनंद घेत आहोत तसे ते त्यांच्या जीवनाचा आनंद घेऊ शकतील.
