பால் வேலைக்காரியான மோதி, பல சீடர்கள் மற்றும் ரசிகர்களைக் கொண்ட ஒரு புகழ்பெற்ற பண்டிதருக்கு பால் வழங்கினார். ஒரு பெரிய பண்டிதருக்குச் சேவை செய்வதே பெரிய பாக்கியம் என்று எண்ணி, தன் கடமைகளை உண்மையாகச் செய்தாள் பால்குடம். ஒரு நாள், பண்டிதர் சூரிய உதயத்திற்கு ஒரு மணி நேரத்திற்கு முன்பே பால் கொடுக்கச் சொன்னார், ஏனெனில் அவர் ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட சடங்குகளைச் செய்வதாக சபதம் செய்தார். பால்காரர் ஒப்புக்கொண்டார், ஆனால் சூரிய உதயத்திற்குப் பிறகு பால் வழங்க வந்தார். பண்டிதரிடம் விசாரித்தபோது, படகோட்டி இல்லாமல் ஆற்றைக் கடக்க முடியாது என்று சொன்னாள். விஷ்ணுவின் பெயரை உச்சரிப்பதன் மூலம் ஒருவர் வாழ்க்கைக் கடலைக் கூட கடக்க முடியும் என்று பண்டிதர் நகைச்சுவையாக கருத்து தெரிவித்தார். அந்த ரகசியத்தை தன்னிடம் தெரிவித்ததற்காக பண்டிதருக்கு நன்றி கூறினாள்.

நாட்கள் கடந்து, பண்டிதரின் சபதம் முடிவடைந்தது. பண்டிதர் அவளுக்கு நன்றி கூறி, படகோட்டியிடம் தனது பணிக்காக அவர் மகிழ்ச்சியடைந்ததைச் சொல்லும்படி கேட்டார். படகோட்டியின் உதவியின்றி தான் ஆற்றைக் கடந்ததாக பால் வேலைக்காரி சொன்னாள். அவள் விஷ்ணுவின் பெயரை உச்சரித்துவிட்டு ஆற்றைக் கடந்தாள். இதைக் கேட்ட பண்டிதர் ஆச்சரியப்பட்டார். உண்மையை அறிய அவளை பின் தொடர்ந்தான். பாலுக்காரி ஆற்றுக்கு மரியாதை செலுத்திவிட்டு, அதை எளிதாகக் கடப்பதைக் கண்டதும், அவர் கிட்டத்தட்ட மயக்கமடைந்தார்.

நம்பிக்கையின் அற்புதத்தை நிரூபிக்கும் அதே வேளையில், கதை புலமைக்கும் அப்பாவித்தனத்திற்கும் இடையிலான வேறுபாட்டையும் காட்டுகிறது. இது அவர்களின் கோட்பாட்டின் அறிவுக்கும் கடவுள் நம்பிக்கையின் மூலம் செயல்படும் அறிவுக்கும் உள்ள வித்தியாசத்தைக் காட்டுகிறது.
