Once upon a time there was a poor woodcutter. He did not earn any money during the rainy season. For many days and nights he had not got anything to eat. He took a long walk in search of work. On the way he found a well. When he was passing by the well he heard the sound of 'Save-Save'. The woodcutter peeped inside the well. He saw a monkey, a tiger, a snake and a jeweler inside the well.

They shouted again, 'Get us out.' The woodcutter was in a dilemma. If he took out the snake and the tiger, they could have killed him. He said, 'When you come out, you will bite or kill me.' The tiger and the snake said, 'We are not so ungrateful as to harm the one who saves us. The woodcutter took them all out. They thanked him and said, 'We would be very happy if we could ever be of any help to you.' And gone.

Days passed by. One day the woodcutter in the forest. was cutting a tree. He was very tired and hungry. He. He stopped near a tree. The monkey saw him and dropped some sweet fruits for him. The woodcutter ate them full. And felt myself full of energy. He resumed his work. While returning he found the tiger. The tiger gave him a set of gold ornaments. The woodcutter thought, 'My troubles are over now. I will get money by selling gold. I can live my life easily and comfortably.' He went to the jeweler to sell the jewellery.

The jeweler immediately took the jewelery and went straight to the king. He said to the king, 'Huzoor, the princess's lost jewelery has been found.' The poor woodcutter was arrested and put in jail. He thought of the jeweler's ingratitude and thought of the snake. The snake immediately appeared and said, 'I will bite the queen and she will not be all right until you touch her head with your axe and thus you can get the king's grace.' Saying this the snake went away.

The snake bit the queen. A cloud of danger began to hover over the life of the queen. One of the king's servants said, “The woodcutter in jail can save the life of the queen. Immediately the woodcutter was called. He came and touched the queen's forehead with his axe. She was completely right. The woodcutter was freed and the king gave him all his ornaments and a lot of gold. The ungrateful jeweler was very ashamed of what he had done.

एक बार की बात है एक गरीब लकड़हारा था। बरसात के मौसम में उसने कोई धन नहीं कमाया। कई दिनों और रातों तक उसे कुछ खाने को नहीं मिला था। उसने काम की तलाश में एक लम्बी पैदल यात्रा की। रास्ते में उसे एक कुआँ मिला। जब वह कुएँ के पास से गुजर रहा था उसने बचाओ-बचाओ’ की आवाज सुनी। लकड़हारा कुएँ के भीतर झाँका। उसने एक बन्दर, एक बाघ, एक साँप तथा एक जौहरी को कुएँ के अन्दर देखा।

वे पुनः चिल्लाये, “हमें बाहर निकालो।” लकड़हारा दुविधा में था। यदि उसने साँप और बाघ को बाहर निकाला तो वे उसे मार सकते थे। उसने कहा, “जब तुम बाहर आओगे तो तुम मुझे काट लोगे या मार दोगे।” बाघ और साँप ने कहा, “हम इतने कृतघ्न नहीं हैं कि अपने बचाने वाले को हानि पहुँचाएँ। लकड़हारे ने उन सभी को बाहर निकाल लिया। उन्होंने उसे धन्यवाद दिया और कहा, “हमें अत्यधिक प्रसन्नता होगी यदि हम कभी आपकी कोई मदद कर सकते हों।” और चले गए।

दिन गुजरते गए। एक दिन लकड़हारा जंगल में। एक पेड़ काट रहा था। वह बहुत थका हुआ और भूखा था। वह। एक पेड़ के पास रुक गया। बन्दर ने उसे देखा और कुछ मीठे फल उसके लिए नीचे गिरा दिए। लकड़हारे ने उन्हें पेट भर खाया। और स्वयं को ऊर्जा से भरा अनुभव किया। उसने अपना काम पुनः आरम्भ कर दिया। लौटते समय उसे बाघ मिला। बाघ ने उसे सोने के आभूषणों का एक सैट दिया। लकड़हारे ने सोचा, “मेरी परेशानियाँ अब समाप्त हो गई हैं। मैं सोने को बेचकर धन पा लूँगा। मैं अपना जीवन आसानी और आराम से गुजार सकता हूँ।” वह आभूषणों को बेचने जौहरी के पास गया।

जौहरी ने तुरन्त आभूषण लिए और सीधा राजा के पास गया। उसने राजा से कहा, “हुजूर, राजकुमारी के खोये हुए आभूषण मिल गए हैं।” गरीब लकड़हारे को गिरफ्तार कर जेल में डाल दिया गया। उसने जौहरी की कृतघ्नता के बारे में सोचा और साँप के बारे में विचार किया। साँप तुरन्त प्रकट हो गया और उसने कहा, “मैं रानी को डस लूँगा और वह तब तक शिवलाल दिग्दर्शिका सम्पूर्ण विषय ठीक नहीं होगी जब तक तुम अपनी कुल्हाड़ी से उनके मस्तक को नहीं छुओगे और इस प्रकार तुम राजा की कृपा पा सकते हो।” ऐसा कहकर साँप चला गया।

साँप ने रानी को डस लिया। रानी के जीवन पर खतरे के बादल मँडराने लगे। राजा के एक सेवक ने कहा, “जेल में बन्द लकड़हारा रानी के जीवन को बचा सकता है। तुरन्त लकड़हारे को बुलाया गया। वह आया और उसने रानी के माथे को अपनी कुल्हाड़ी से छुआ। वह पूर्णरूप से सही हो गयी। लकड़हारे को मुक्त कर दिया गया और राजा ने उसके सारे आभूषण और बहुत-सा सोना उसे दिया। कृतघ्न जौहरी अपने किए पर बहुत शर्मिन्दा हुआ।
