'Sacrifice' by Kathleen Benner Double is the story of the horrors that a family endured during the Salem witch hunt and subsequent trials of the late seventeenth century in Massachusetts. The main character is ten-year-old Abigail Faulkner. She is a free-spirited young girl who is strong and thoughtful and is like her loving mother, Hannah. The story begins with this child being sentenced to six hours in stockade. The background of the story is the harsh and just society that existed at that time. The puritanical principles under which people were required to live were rigid, adamant and unfair. The 'sin' the ten-year-old girl committed was holding her skirt a few inches off the ground so that she could run. Girls in that community couldn't run and certainly couldn't pull off their clothes, even if it only exposed their ankles.

Hannah, Abigail's mother, was just as high-spirited as her daughter. However, she had no choice but to bear the punishment of her daughter, even though she knew it was unfair. Abigail's grandfather, The Reverend Dane, was a minister at the meeting house. Abigail was afraid to attend Sunday service because she was certain she would be the center of gossip and ridicule, and the main subject of her grandfather's sermon. But she was wrong: Grandpa's preaching centered around lies and how it was a violation of the Ten Commandments.

Later, Grandfather tells his family that he decided to preach about lying because of an ominous tendency, far more ominous than a ten-year-old who was walking in the meadow. In Salem, a short distance from her community in Andover, young women were being accused of witchcraft. The punishment for working in league with Satan was death or life imprisonment. The Faulkners were shocked but certain the madness would not extend to Andover.

However, a disgruntled former maid of the family went to the authorities and claimed that Abigail and her older sister, Dorothy, were witches. And Abigail's Aunt Elizabeth was also reportedly a witch. Two young girls and their young aunt were imprisoned in a terrible prison that was full of bedbugs, lice and rats and were tied to the wall with chains.

Hannah was angry and would stop at nothing to win the freedom of her daughters and sister. Abigail's father, Francis, was a passive figure considered by many to be weak. He was tormented by spells in which he heard voices and spoke to invisible people. Hannah knew it was up to her to get her daughters back home where they belonged. He devised a plan in which he secured his freedom by putting himself in jail instead of his daughters.

Although Hannah is still imprisoned when the story ends, there are signs that people, including the state's governor and Grandfather, are on a path that will end the madness that has engulfed the community.
