Raja Bhoj was a worshiper of Goddess Saraswati. He did not believe in such erudition which was hidden in books, he believed in such a scholarship which constantly struggled to push the limits of human knowledge. In his court, the highest respect was given to erudition and to the people who were constantly trying to achieve it. He himself was a great scholar of important questions of language, grammar, poetry, sculpture, architecture, astrology, music, drama and ethics, and philosophy. One day he was roaming in the rural area with a highly educated scholar from the neighboring state. While traveling, both of them were immersed in literary and philosophical discussions. Because of this they forgot the way. Coming to a village where an old woman was taking care of her field, they stopped and asked her,
"Dear Mother, where does this road lead?"
“This road leads nowhere, it stays here. Only those people who walk on it go somewhere. So tell me who are you?"
“We are travelers. He answered.
The old lady smiled. “There are only two passengers – the sun and the moon. You tell me the truth, who are you?"
"Sister, we are guests." The learned man said.
“The guests are only two – one is wealth and the other is youth. Now tell me who are you? said the old woman.
"We are the king." Raja Bhoj said.
“There are only two kings, one Indra (King of gods) and the other Yama (God of death). Now tell me which of these are you?” The old lady asked.
Now Raja Bhoj and his companions were astonished. “We…….. we are both men of great caliber.” They said.
“There are only two of great merit – one the earth and the other woman, but you are not seen among them.
Now tell me who are you?
"Sister, we are saints." Raja Bhoj said in despair.
"You don't look like a monk to me." The woman said in disagreement, nodding her head.
"Yet there are only two sages." He said, one humility and the other contentment. Now the learned man gathered courage and said, "Sister, we are foreigners." But that woman did not approve of this, "You are not a foreigner." he said.
Only the soul and the leaf of the tree can be foreigners. Now tell me who are you?"
The king and his learned companion were finding it difficult to find words in the face of the woman's astonishing answers. ____ Now it was the fellow scholar's turn to say something, “Sister we are clever.” They said.
“The only two things clever in this world are food and water. Which of these are you?" The old woman retaliated.
On this Raja Bhoj and his learned guest groaned and said, We have lost.
"There are only two losers in this world." The woman said, “One is a man burdened with debt and the other is the father of a girl without virtue. Why don't you honestly tell me who you are?"
Raising his hands in despair, Raja Bhoj and the learned man said, "What shall we say sister? The truth is that we don't know anything. You are the one who knows everything." At these words, the old lady's smile spread on her face and she became serious. He said in a calm and gentle voice, "Both of you were proud of your wealth and knowledge. I knew from the very beginning that you are Raja Bhoj and this is your guest. It was my own way of bringing you back to earth. Go down this path." He pointed, "This is the way back home."
Raja Bhoj and his learned guests bowed before the grown woman who had opened their eyes by revealing their shortcomings. On his way back home, he had a lot to think about. - Sharda Bell
