Mukund Mishra and his wife gave birth to the great musician Tansen as their child. He was an expert observer of nature. He learned and imitated the sounds of birds and animals.
Once Swami Haridas was traveling in the forest with his disciple. They were afraid of Tansen because he was roaring like a lion to scare them. Swami Haridas told them not to be afraid of tigers and they are not always dangerous.
When they were looking out from the roaring tiger, they found Tansen. Swami Haridas instead of punishing him took him to his father. He asked Tansen to be his disciple as he felt that he could make him a good singer.
He left home at the age of ten and learned music for eleven years. He became a famous singer. His father's last wish was that Tansen should go to Mohammad Ghaus where he used to go. On his visits to Gwalior, Tansen was often taken to the court of Queen Mrignani, who was also a great musician.
There he met Hussaini, another disciple of Swami Haridas, and married him.
Tansen's children also learned music. He later joined the court of Emperor Akbar, who was impressed by his 'talent'. He became her favorite and later the target of jealous courtiers.
He promised to destroy her. Shaukat Miyan's plan was to make him sing Raag Deepak as it burns the singer to ashes.
He convinced Akbar to challenge the singer to sing. Since Tansen could not refuse but knew the consequences. He was worried, so he spoke to his wife, who advised him to prepare and train his daughter to sing Raga Megha to counteract the fiery effect of Raga Deepak.
On the appointed day, when Tansen started singing. Raga lamp, the air became hot. Trees, plants, animals and birds and people were affected by this. At last the lamp was lit. Realizing the disastrous fate, both Saraswati and Rupvati started singing for rain.
Thus Tansen was saved by his daughters. Realizing the mistake he had made with Tansen, Akbar punished the jealous courtiers for posing a threat to his life. Tansen recovered and Akbar made him the singer of his court. Tansen composed many new ragas and rested peacefully in Gwalior in the year 1585.
