Once upon a time, there was a generous boy named Shravan Kumar. Both his mother and father were blind. This meant that he had to do all the chores and chores, but he was still loved and devoted to his parents. One day his parents expressed their desire to go on a pilgrimage in these last days. Shravan Kumar was determined to fulfill his parents' wish. He built a cart consisting of two baskets bound by three ropes to a rod, which was used to carry the baskets. He put his parents in the baskets, the mother in one and the father in the other, and carried the stick on his shoulders. Then he went on a pilgrimage with his parents.

On the way, his parents needed some water so Shravan Kumar stopped to fill a bucket of water for them from a river. At the same time a king named Dasharatha was hunting in the forest and when he heard the sound of water in the river, he thought that he had heard some animal so he shot an arrow. Unfortunately, it was not an animal but Shravan Kumar. The arrow hit Shravan Kumar and he was close to death.

When Dasharatha realized what he had done he was very sorry and asked Shravan Kumar what he could do to ease the pain. In his last breath, Shravan Kumar narrated his story to Dasharatha and begged him to give water to his parents. Dasharatha filled the water and gave it to the blind parents. Then he told them what had happened and asked for forgiveness. Hearing what had happened, both the parents were filled with grief and cursed Dasharatha that he too would die due to the loss of the son. After this the parents drowned themselves in the same river.

रास्ते में, उसके माता-पिता को कुछ पानी चाहिए था इसलिए श्रवण कुमार उनके लिए एक नदी से एक बाल्टी पानी भरने के लिए रुक गए। उसी समय दशरथ नाम का एक राजा जंगल में शिकार कर रहा था और जब उसने नदी में पानी की आवाज सुनी तो उसे लगा कि उसने कोई जानवर सुना है इसलिए उसने तीर चला दिया। दुर्भाग्य से, यह कोई जानवर नहीं बल्कि श्रवण कुमार था। तीर श्रवण कुमार को लगा और वह मौत के करीब था।

जब दशरथ को एहसास हुआ कि उन्होंने क्या किया है तो उन्हें बहुत खेद हुआ और उन्होंने श्रवण कुमार से पूछा कि दर्द को कम करने के लिए वह क्या कर सकते हैं। अपनी अंतिम सांसों में, श्रवण कुमार ने दशरथ को अपनी कहानी सुनाई और उनसे अपने माता-पिता को पानी देने की भीख मांगी। दशरथ ने जल भरकर नेत्रहीन माता-पिता को दे दिया। फिर उसने उन्हें बताया कि क्या हुआ था और क्षमा के लिए कहा। जो कुछ हुआ था उसे सुनकर माता-पिता दोनों दुःख से भर गए और दशरथ को श्राप दिया कि वह भी पुत्र की हानि के कारण मर जाएगा। इसके बाद माता-पिता ने खुद को उसी नदी में डुबो दिया।
