Chandrashekhar, the son of Pandit Sitaram Tiwari and Jagrani Devi, was born in Jhabua district (present-day Madhya Pradesh). K was born on July 23, 1906 in Bhabra village.
He had his early education in Bhabra. He received his higher education at the Sanskrit Pathshala in Varanasi. He was a great devotee of Hanuman and once masqueraded as a priest in a Hanuman temple to escape the clutches of the British police. Young Chandrashekhar was greatly influenced by the great national wave of non-violent non-cooperation movement of 1920-21 under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. He participated in it and was arrested and appeared before the magistrate. He told his name as 'Azad', his father's name as 'Swatantra' and his place of residence to Jail. This enraged the magistrate and he sentenced them to 15 whips.
As a revolutionary, he took his surname 'Azad' which means 'free'. He had claimed that true to his name, he would never be caught alive by the police. Chandrashekhar Azad was a great Indian freedom fighter. His fierce patriotism and courage inspired others to join the freedom movement. Chandrashekhar was the guru of Bhagat Singh, who was a great freedom fighter. Both Chandrashekhar and Bhagat Singh actively participated in the revolutionary activities. He was deeply saddened by the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919. He was also involved in Kakori's case.
After the non-cooperation movement came to an end, he was attracted towards more aggressive revolutionary ideals. Chandrashekhar was a terror to the British police. He was their target and the British police wanted to catch him either alive or dead. On February 27, 1931, Chandrashekhar Azad came to meet his two companions at Azad Park (Alfred Park) in Allahabad. He was betrayed by a British police informer. The police surrounded the park and asked Chandrashekhar Azad to surrender. Azad fought bravely and he killed three policemen. But seeing himself surrounded, he shot himself. Thus he fulfilled his vow not to be caught alive. He used to sing his favorite Hindustani couplets.
We will face the bullets of the enemy, have been free, will remain free. In order to pay tribute to such a revolutionary hero of Mother India, the state government has decided to institute 'Shaheed Chandrashekhar Azad Memorial Award'. The prize money will be ₹ 1.50 lakh and will be presented at a special function organized on the martyrdom day of Chandrashekhar Azad.
