Biography: The original name of Sumitranandan Pant was Gosai Dutt. Pantji, the sweet poet of nature, was born in Almora district. Happened on May 20, 1900 AD in a village called Kausani. For higher education, you took admission in Mayor Central College, Prayag. He was able to study there only for two years that on the call of Gandhiji in 1921 he left foreign education forever.

After that, you made self-study and literary practice the goal of life. For some time you also lived in the state of Kala Kankar. Influenced by Marxism, you presented your views through the magazine 'Rupabh'. After that he also worked in All India Radio.

The personality of Pantji was very gentle, simple and like a sage. In the words of Indranath Madan - 'Pant is reticent, public-spirited and hesitant by nature. His personality is very gentle and charming. Curly, silky long hair, clean and luscious eyes, serious and simple countenance are the means of attraction. Even though his costume is very simple, the first place of elegance is in it. They are irritated by the ugliness. Love of beauty, being self-respecting and self-confident as well as being biased towards moderation in life.

जीवन परिचय : सुमित्रानंदन पंत का मूल नाम गोसाँई दत्त था । प्रकृति के सुकुमार कवि पंतजी का जन्म अल्मोड़ा जिले के । कौसानी नामक गाँव में 20 मई, 1900 ई. को हुआ । माता सरस्वती देवी उन्हें जन्म देने के बाद मूर्छितावस्था में ही स्वर्गवासी हो गयी थीं, फलतः पिता गंगादत्तजी ने इन्हें माता-पिता दोनों का स्नेह प्रदान किया । साथ ही यह भी सोच है कि प्रकृति ही इनकी धात्री – रही ।

कवि की प्राथमिक शिक्षा घर पर ही हुई । फिर वाराणसी के जयनारायण कॉलेज में प्रवेश किया । यहाँ इनका नाम गुसाँई दत्त से सुमित्रानंदन पंत हो गया । उच्च शिक्षा हेतु आपने प्रयाग के म्योर सेन्ट्रल कॉलेज में प्रवेश लिया । अभी दो वर्ष ही वहाँ अध्ययन कर पाये थे कि गाँधीजी के आह्वाहन पर सन् 1921 में विलायती शिक्षा सदा के लिये छोड़ दी ।

तत्पश्चात् आपने स्वाध्याय और साहित्य साधना को ही जीवन का लक्ष्य बना लिया । कुछ समय आप काला कांकर राज्य में भी रहे । आपने मार्क्सवाद से प्रभावित होकर ‘रूपाभ’ पत्रिका के माध्यम से अपने विचार प्रस्तुत किये । तत्पश्चात् आकाशवाणी में भी काम किया ।

पंतजी का व्यक्तित्व बड़ा सौम्य, सरल और ऋषि तुल्य था । इन्द्रनाथ मदान के शब्दों में – ‘पंत मितभाषी हैं, जनभीरू हैं और स्वभाव से संकोचशील हैं । उनका व्यक्तित्व बड़ा ही सौम्य और आकर्षक है । धुंघराले, रेशम से लम्बे लम्बे बाल, स्वच्छ और स्निग्ध आँखें, गंभीर और सरल मुखाकृति आकर्षण के साधन हैं । उनकी वेशभूषा अत्यंत सादी होने पर भी उसमें सुरुचि का प्रथम स्थान है । कुरूपता से उन्हें चिढ़ है । सौंदर्य से प्रेम, स्वाभिमानी और आत्मविश्वासी होने के साथ-साथ जीवन में संयम के पक्षपाती हैं ।’

साहित्यिक परिचय : पंतजी जन्मजात कवि हैं । बचपन से ही कविता लिखने लगे थे । बाद में उन्होंने अपनी बहुमुखी प्रतिभा का प्रदर्शन किया । उनकी रचनाओं को इस प्रकार वर्गीकृत कर सकते हैं –
