एक मध्यम वर्ग की शिक्षित बेटी अपनी मां को लिखती है कि वह अपने पति के पैतृक घर में सभी को खुश रखने के लिए कैसे संघर्ष करती है और कैसे प्रयास करती है। उसे ससुराल वालों से किसी तारीफ की उम्मीद नहीं है। उनकी मां का जवाब है जिसमें पुरुष प्रभुत्व और पुरानी नारीत्व के खिलाफ अपनी नाराजगी व्यक्त की है। कहानी शोषित और संघर्षरत नारीत्व की समकालीन स्थिति की अभिव्यक्ति है।

बेटी की मां को लिखी चिट्ठी में दिल को छू लेने वाली अभिव्यक्ति है। वह लिखती हैं, 'मुझे याद है जब मैं झुकी हुई थी तो तुमने मुझे गले से लगाया था और कहा था, 'बेटी, डरो मत। इस दुनिया में कोई भी डर के मारे नहीं जी सकता। उस शक्ति को अपने भीतर और चेहरे से, दुनिया से बाहर लाना होगा। हमारे रास्ते अँधेरे हैं। खुद की आंखों की रोशनी ही रास्ता दिखाती है। क्या कोई जीवन भर दूसरे के साथ रह सकता है? फिर भी मेरी आत्मा तुम्हारी परछाई की तरह हमेशा तुम्हारे पास रहेगी। ”

बेटी और मां के बीच दृढ़ता की भावना के बीच एक स्वाभाविक अंतर है। माँ अपनी प्यारी बेटी को खुश करने की कोशिश करती है। वह अपनी बेटी को लिखती है, 'तुम्हें अब भी याद है, क्या तुम मगरमच्छ की दास्तां से मित्रवत नहीं हो एक बंदर! कोई जितना अधिक किसी के करीब आता है, उतना ही वह दूसरे को खाता है। लेकिन क्या कोई हर समय सचेत और सतर्क रह सकता है? मुझे अब एहसास हुआ कि मेरे अंदरूनी हिस्से कैसे खा गए होंगे। या यह है कि मैंने अपना दिल दूर कर दिया है? या फिर आपका पत्र पढ़कर मैं इस विशाल खालीपन का अनुभव क्यों कर रहा हूँ ?
