Sam Harmuzzi Pramji Jamshedji Manekshaw or Sam Manekshaw was born on 3 April 1914 in Amritsar. After completing class XI from Sherwood College in Nainital, he passed out from the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun in 1934, when he was 22 years old. He participated in World War II and was defending Burma against Japanese attack. Manekshaw was very cordial with his fellow soldiers. in June 1969.

He replaced General Kumaramangalam as the eighth Chief of the Army Staff. As a commander, he served the country with dedication and within two years of his promotion to the highest rank. He received Padma Vibhushan in 1972 and became Field Marshal in 1973. Retired from service in 1973. Manekshaw settled in Coonoor, Nilgiris till his death in 2008.
