The city rat lived behind the kitchen cupboard in a rich man's house in a city while the country mouse lived in a country house. They were cousins. They often wrote letters to each other.

One day the city mouse wrote a letter to his cousin saying that he was ill and wanted to live with the native mouse in his country as he had been advised to spend a week in the countryside. The native mouse got the letter from the city mouse. He invited the city rat to his countryside. So he packed his bags and caught the next train in the countryside. He felt the heat in the train as the day was hot and sunny. He wished he had been in an air-conditioned coach.

The Country Mouse received the Town Mouse at the Countryside Station. The city mouse asked for some orange juice or lemonade from the native mouse saying that he was thirsty. But the native mouse made him drink coconut water. At dinner the country mouse served the Town Mouse at his house which consisted of root and sugarcane. The city mouse was gnawing on the root and the sugarcane because he had not enjoyed the dinner. Afterwards he had to sleep on the hard, cold ground. The countryside was very quiet. The mouse found it strange and did not like it. He went back to his city.

Next time, the native mouse visits the town mouse's house. He didn't like the traffic there. He was surprised to see the lights in the streets even in the middle of the night. The native mouse wanted some water and some food. The city mouse gave him cold lemonade and orange juice to drink. The Town-Mouse offered him bread and jam, a variety of fruits, slabs of chocolate and a large piece of beloved cheese. The native rat had to eat and drink what the city rat had offered. Meanwhile, he had to run to safety and disguise himself when someone enters the room and opens the cupboard. The native mouse was tired of doing this and did not like to be there. So, he took leave of his cousin and went back to his home in the country. Since then, they never visited each other again.

अगली बार, देशी माउस ने टाउन माउस के घर का दौरा किया। उसे वहां का ट्रैफिक पसंद नहीं था। आधी रात में भी गलियों में रोशनी देखकर उसे आश्चर्य हुआ। देशी चूहा थोड़ा पानी और थोड़ा सा खाना चाहता था। शहर के चूहे ने उसे ठंडा नींबू पानी और संतरे का रस पीने के लिए दिया। टाउन-माउस ने उसे रोटी और जैम, विभिन्न प्रकार के फल, चॉकलेट के स्लैब और प्यारे पनीर का एक बड़ा टुकड़ा दिया। देशी चूहे को वह खाना-पीना था जो शहर के चूहे ने पेश किया था। इस बीच, उन्हें सुरक्षा के लिए भागना पड़ा और किसी के कमरे में घुसने और अलमारी खोलने पर खुद को छिपाना पड़ा। देशी चूहा ऐसा करते-करते थक गया था और उसे वहाँ रहना पसंद नहीं था। इसलिए, उसने अपने चचेरे भाई की छुट्टी ली और देश में अपने घर वापस चला गया। तब से, वे फिर से एक-दूसरे से मिलने नहीं गए।
