Gopi was a government official living in Delhi. He married Vimala. Eldest daughter of District Collector Nambiar. He had four children. Gopi's old mother lived in the countryside with her eldest daughter Kamala. After attending a meeting in Thiruvananthapuram, he came inside on his way back. Her mother saw her getting down at the gate and asked Kamala who she was. Kamala reluctantly walked slowly towards the gate. He recognized Gopi and asked him obnoxiously why he had made the sudden unexpected journey. But Amma did not recognize him. Gopi tries to tell her that he is her son. Kamala told Gopi that Amma used to live like this often in those days. She didn't recognize anyone. When Amma asks Kamala if her son (Gopi) has sent the letter, Kamala tells her that all is well with her. But Gopi did not write him any letter. When Kamala told all these things to Gopi, he replied that he was always on his toes as he got promotion last year. So he did not get time to write the letter. Amma again asked who he was. Gopi tells him that he is his son Gopi and that he has come from Delhi. He forgot his wife's name too. She used to think that Gopi used to write letters to her everyday. So he asked Kamala if she had written the letter that day. Gopi placed his briefcase on the thine, opened it and took out his contents like clothes, files, a shaving set etc. Amma told Gopi that her son Gopi was a government official in Delhi and had Kesariyogam. He asked to send her a new red blanket to protect her from the cold mist. His old blanket, which was brought by Gopi while studying in Madras, was all torn. Actually Gopi had not come to the village, had come to see her Amma too. He had no affection and love for his mother. He gave more importance to the situation. He wanted to raise some money by selling his share of the family property. He had come to talk to his sister. Kamala knew that he would never come there after selling his land. When he told this to Gopi, he replied that he would come when he got time. He said that Amma did not remember who he was. In fact, he was the one who did not remember his mother.

गोपी दिल्ली में रहने वाले एक सरकारी अधिकारी थे। उन्होंने विमला से शादी की। जिला कलेक्टर नांबियार की सबसे बड़ी बेटी। उनके चार बच्चे थे। गोपी की बूढ़ी मां अपनी बड़ी बेटी कमला के साथ देहात में रहती थी। तिरुवनंतपुरम में एक बैठक में भाग लेने के बाद, वह वापस जाते समय अंदर आ गया। उसकी माँ ने उसे गेट पर उतरते देखा और कमला से पूछा कि वह कौन है। कमला अनिच्छा से धीरे से गेट की ओर चली। उसने गोपी को पहचान लिया और उससे अप्रिय तरीके से पूछा कि उसने अचानक अप्रत्याशित यात्रा क्यों की। लेकिन अम्मा ने उसे पहचाना नहीं। गोपी ने उसे यह बताने की कोशिश की कि वह उसका बेटा है। कमला ने गोपी से कहा कि अम्मा उन दिनों अक्सर ऐसी ही रहती थीं। वह किसी को नहीं पहचानती थी। जब अम्मा ने कमला से पूछा कि क्या उसके बेटे (गोपी) ने पत्र भेजा है, तो कमला ने उसे बताया कि उसके साथ सब कुछ ठीक है। लेकिन गोपी ने उसे कोई पत्र नहीं लिखा। जब कमला ने गोपी को ये सब बातें बताईं, तो उसने जवाब दिया कि वह हमेशा अपने पैर की उंगलियों पर था क्योंकि उसे पिछले साल पदोन्नति मिली थी। इसलिए उन्हें पत्र लिखने का समय नहीं मिला। अम्मा ने फिर पूछा कि वह कौन है। गोपी ने उसे बताया कि वह उसका बेटा गोपी है और वह दिल्ली से आया है। वह अपनी पत्नी का नाम भी भूल गई। वह सोचती थी कि गोपी उसे रोज पत्र लिखता था। तो उसने कमला से पूछा कि क्या उसने उस दिन पत्र लिखा था। गोपी ने थिने पर अपना ब्रीफकेस रखा, खोला और अपनी सामग्री जैसे कपड़े, फाइलें, एक शेविंग सेट आदि निकाला। अम्मा ने गोपी को बताया कि उसका बेटा गोपी दिल्ली में एक सरकारी अधिकारी था और उसके पास केसरियोगम था। उसने उसे ठंडी धुंध से बचाने के लिए उसे एक नया लाल कंबल भेजने के लिए कहा। उसका पुराना कंबल, जो गोपी द्वारा मद्रास में पढ़ते समय लाया गया था, सब फटा हुआ था। दरअसल गोपी गांव में नहीं आई थी, अपनी अम्मा को भी देखने आई थी। उन्हें अपनी अम्मा के प्रति कोई स्नेह और प्रेम नहीं था। उन्होंने स्थिति को अधिक महत्व दिया। वह पारिवारिक संपत्ति का अपना हिस्सा बेचकर कुछ धन जुटाना चाहता था। वह अपनी बहन से बात करने आया था। कमला को पता था कि वह अपनी जमीन बेचकर वहां कभी नहीं आएगा। जब उसने गोपी को यही बताया, तो उसने जवाब दिया कि जब उसे समय मिलेगा तो वह आ जाएगा। उसने कहा कि अम्मा को याद नहीं कि वह कौन था। असल में वो ही थे जिन्हें अपनी अम्मा की याद नहीं थी।
