Once upon a time there was an old demon. He was very selfish. He had a lovely garden with soft green grass. The grass stood as beautiful as the stars and there were twelve peach trees in the garden. Every afternoon, when they were coming from school, the children used to play in the Giant's garden. The Giant had gone to visit his friend Cornish Ogg and came back seven years later. When the demon came back he saw children playing in the garden. The selfish demon told the children that they could not play in his garden. They built a high wall all around and put up a notice-board: 'The trespassers will be prosecuted.' Now the children could not play anywhere. They tried to play on the road, but it was very dirty and there were a lot of hard stones on the road. When a boy told that the demon was selfish, the demon opened a door in the wall and said again that he would not let anyone play in his garden. Hearing his voice, the children raised an alarm. Then spring came, and there were little flowers and little birds all over the country. But it was still winter in the Giant's Garden. In his garden the birds did not come to sing, and the trees forgot to bloom. North wind, hail, frost and snow were dancing through the trees in the garden.

एक बार एक बूढ़ा दानव था। वह बहुत स्वार्थी था। उसके पास एक बड़ा प्यारा बगीचा था, जिसमें नर्म हरी घास थी। घास सितारों की तरह सुंदर फूल खड़ी थी और बगीचे में बारह आड़ू के पेड़ थे। हर दोपहर, जब वे स्कूल से आ रहे थे, बच्चे जाइंट के बगीचे में जाकर खेलते थे। जाइंट अपने दोस्त कोर्निश ओग से मिलने गया था और सात साल बाद वापस आया। जब दानव वापस आया तो उसने देखा कि बच्चे बगीचे में खेल रहे हैं। स्वार्थी दानव ने बच्चों से कहा कि वे उसके बगीचे में नहीं खेल सकते। उन्होंने चारों ओर एक ऊंची दीवार बनाई और एक नोटिस-बोर्ड लगाया: 'अतिचारियों पर मुकदमा चलाया जाएगा।' अब बच्चे कहीं नहीं खेल सकते थे। उन्होंने सड़क पर खेलने की कोशिश की, लेकिन यह बहुत गंदा था और सड़क पर बहुत सारे कड़े पत्थर थे। जब एक लड़के ने बताया कि दानव स्वार्थी है, तो दानव ने दीवार में एक दरवाजा खोला और फिर से कहा कि वह अपने बगीचे में किसी को खेलने नहीं देगा। उसकी आवाज सुनकर बच्चों ने शोर मचाया। फिर बसंत आया, और सारे देश में छोटे फूल और छोटे पक्षी थे। लेकिन जायंट के बगीचे में अभी भी सर्दी थी। उसके बगीचे में पक्षी गाने के लिए नहीं आए, और पेड़ खिलना भूल गए। बगीचे में पेड़ों के बीच से उत्तरी हवा, ओले, पाला और बर्फ नाच रहे थे।
