The poem is written in response to the indecision of the poet. At a deeper level it is about the choices to be made in life and the dilemma that comes with making these choices.

The poet, traveling alone one day, reaches a point where the road splits into two. They had to decide which road to choose as they both liked it equally. He stands there for a long time and tries to make a decision. Not having traveled on both roads that day as both are covered with leaves, after thinking for a long time, he decides not to take the road trampled by anyone's footsteps.

After choosing a road that seems to be less traveled. He decides to leave the other road for another day, even though he knows that once the election is made the person travels back and forth along the chosen road until it is impossible to return.

The poet says that centuries later he will tell his story of how he chose the less traveled road and it made a huge difference in his life. He feels sad because he will regret that he didn't choose another path. It is human nature to constantly wonder if another way would give more fame, happiness and wealth. What the poet is saying is that it is difficult to decide and then after making a choice the alternative seems as good, if not better, than the chosen one.

कविता कवि की अनिर्णय की प्रतिक्रिया में लिखी गई है। गहरे स्तर पर यह जीवन में किए जाने वाले विकल्पों और इन विकल्पों को बनाने में आने वाली दुविधा के बारे में है।

कवि, एक दिन अकेले यात्रा करते हुए, एक ऐसे स्थान पर पहुँचता है जहाँ सड़क दो भागों में विभाजित हो जाती है। उन्हें यह तय करना था कि कौन सी सड़क चुननी है क्योंकि दोनों को समान रूप से अच्छा लगता था। वह काफी देर तक वहीं खड़ा रहता है और फैसला लेने की कोशिश करता है। उस दिन दोनों सड़कों पर यात्रा नहीं की गई है क्योंकि दोनों पत्तियों से ढके हुए हैं, बहुत देर तक सोचने के बाद, वह किसी के कदमों से रौंदने वाली सड़क को लेने का फैसला नहीं करता है।

उस सड़क को चुनने के बाद जो कम यात्रा करती प्रतीत होती है। वह दूसरे दिन के लिए दूसरी सड़क छोड़ने का फैसला करता है, भले ही वह जानता है कि एक बार चुनाव हो जाने के बाद व्यक्ति चुनी हुई सड़क के साथ आगे और आगे की यात्रा करता है जब तक कि वापस आना असंभव न हो।

कवि कहता है कि सदियों बाद वह अपनी कहानी सुनाएगा कि कैसे उसने कम यात्रा वाली सड़क को चुना और इससे उसके जीवन में बहुत फर्क पड़ा। उसे दुख होता है क्योंकि उसे इस बात का पछतावा होगा कि उसने दूसरा रास्ता नहीं चुना। यह मानव स्वभाव है कि वह लगातार सोचता रहता है कि क्या दूसरा रास्ता अधिक प्रसिद्धि, खुशी और धन देता। कवि जो कह रहा है वह यह है कि निर्णय लेना कठिन है और फिर चुनाव करने के बाद विकल्प उतना ही अच्छा लगता है, यदि चुने हुए से बेहतर नहीं है
