A rat seller went here and there to sell small rat traps. His clothes were in rags. His cheeks were hollow. He looked like a hungry man. He made wire nets. He begged for material from shops and large farms. Sometimes he resorted to begging to survive and stealing a little. The world has never been kind to him. He had no home, no shelter.

The peddler lived a lonely life. One day as he was thinking about his mousetrap, he had an idea. He thought the world was a mouse in itself. As soon as someone touched it, the net closed on them. He was happy to think of some who were already trapped, and some others who were trying to get into the trap. It was a cold December evening.

He reached a hut on the side of the road. He knocked on the door and asked for a night shelter. The owner of the hut was a lonely old crofter. He wanted someone to talk to. He greeted the shopkeeper. He gave the peddler hot porridge to eat and tobacco to smoke. Then he played cards. Crotter was generous as well as dependable. He told the peddler that he had a cow and sold its milk to a creamery. He also told her that he had received thirty kronor as payment last month. Then he took out a bag and showed him the money. Then he put the money back in the bag and hung it on a nail in the window frame.

The next morning the peddler left. Crotter closed his hut and left. The peddler returned to the hut. He was tempted to steal the money hanging like a bait in the window frame. He broke the plank and stole the money. Now he felt that it was not safe to walk on the public highway. So he went to the forest. There he walked and walked but could not get out. He went in circles. he was tired. He looked at the forest like a mousetrap in which he had been caught. He felt that his end was near. He lay down to die.

After a while, he regularly heard hammer strikes. He knew the sound was coming from Ramjo Ironworks. He stood up and went in the direction of the sound. She spoke to him softly. The peddler believed in him and agreed to go with him. On the way, he regrets that he had stolen the money from the crofter who had put him in a trap.

The Ironmaster was happy to have his old regimental comrade under his roof. He planned to feed her well and give her some respectable work. The servant cut the peddler's hair, shaved him and gave him a bath. The peddler appeared to be wearing one of the Ironmaster's fine suits.

But when the iron master saw it in broad daylight, he felt that he had made a mistake. The peddler was not Captain von Stahle. She felt that the man had cheated on her. He even thought of handing her over to the sheriff. The peddler said he didn't pretend to be who he wasn't. He was not ready to go to the Ironmaster's house. Even then he was ready to go wearing his rags.

He also tells the iron master that the world is a mouse, and that he himself may one day fall into a great temptation' and fall into the trap. Ironmaster told him to leave immediately. Edla didn't like her father asking the poor peddler to leave. He thought it was unfair to turn away the man they had invited. She wanted to enjoy entertaining a homeless wanderer on Christmas Eve.
