उस कहानी में 500 पक्षी थे। उसने बताया कि एक पक्षी झोंपड़ी में गया और एक दाना पकड़े हुए उड़ गया। दूसरे, तीसरे, चौथे पक्षी के बाद कहानी कुछ इस तरह चलती है कि जब बादशाह ने पूछा कि कितने पक्षी बचे हैं तो बीरबल ने बताया कि केवल पांच पक्षी ही उड़े हैं। बाकी चार सौ निन्यानवे पक्षी जाने हैं! बीरबल ऐसे ही चलता रहा, बादशाह ऊब गया। उन्हें बादशाह ने बीरबल से पूछा कि ये पक्षी कब अपना काम पूरा करने वाले हैं। उसके लिए बीरबल ने जवाब दिया जब आप कहना बंद कर देंगे कि आगे क्या है? सरकार। सम्राट को अपनी मूर्खता का एहसास हुआ और उन्होंने इस कार्यक्रम को रोक दिया।
