A long time ago, an old woman lived with her daughter, Siw Mei, in a hut in the forest. Her husband was killed by a tiger a few years back.

Siew Mei helped her mother. She used to cook and clean the food herself. There was a garden in front of his hut. Siew Mei looked after the silkworms growing in the garden. Siew Mei made beautiful silk from the fine silk thread given off by silkworms. He sold the silk to the travelers in the village market and took the money. With that money he bought food and other things.

One day as Siv Mei was returning home, it started to rain heavily and it was getting dark. So, Siv Mei ran to the first hut she saw. He could not find anyone in the hut. Then Siew Mei cleaned the dirty floor and washed the unwashed bowls and dishes. He kept the hut clean. When the rain stopped, Siew Mei came out of the hut. There he saw a long bearded old man, who was about a hundred years old. The man looked at the girl and looked at the clean hut. He understood what the girl had done. He was so pleased that he cut off a little bit of his white beard and put it in a piece of cloth. He tied her up and gave her the bundle.

The old lady told Siew Mei not to give the bundle to anyone. He also asked her to open the bundle at his house.

Sew Mei reached her hut with a bundle. He told his mother what had happened. Then he opened the bundle to show the old lady's beard. When the handle was opened, they were surprised to find the finest silk thread in all of China in that bundle. From that fine silk thread he made the finest silk he had ever seen. He also noticed that the bundle of silk thread still remained the same size as before.

With the fortune they received, the old woman and her daughter, Siew Mei, became famous and lived happily together.

बहुत समय पहले, जंगल में एक झोंपड़ी में एक बूढ़ी औरत अपनी बेटी सिव मेई के साथ रहती थी। उसके पति की कुछ साल पहले बाघ ने हत्या कर दी थी।

सीव मेई ने अपनी मां की मदद की। वह खुद खाना बनाती और साफ करती थी। उनकी झोंपड़ी के सामने एक बगीचा था। सीव मेई ने बगीचे में उगने वाले रेशमकीटों की देखभाल की। सीव मेई ने रेशम के कीड़ों द्वारा दिए गए महीन रेशमी धागे से सुंदर रेशम बनाया। उसने रेशम को गाँव के बाजार में यात्रियों को बेच दिया और पैसे लिए। उस पैसे से उसने खाने-पीने का सामान और अन्य चीजें खरीदीं।

एक दिन जब सिव मेई घर लौट रहा था, तो तेज बारिश होने लगी और अंधेरा होने लगा। तो, सिव मेई पहली झोंपड़ी में भाग गई जिसे उसने देखा था। उसे झोपड़ी में कोई नहीं मिला। फिर सीव मेई ने गंदे फर्श की सफाई की और बिना धुले कटोरे और बर्तन धोए। उसने झोपड़ी को साफ सुथरा रखा। जब बारिश रुकी तो सिव मेई झोंपड़ी से बाहर आ गई। वहाँ उसने एक लंबी दाढ़ी वाले बूढ़े को देखा, जिसकी उम्र लगभग सौ साल थी। उस आदमी ने लड़की को देखा और साफ सुथरी झोपड़ी की ओर देखा। वह समझ गया कि लड़की ने क्या किया है। वह इतना प्रसन्न हुआ कि उसने अपनी सफेद दाढ़ी का थोड़ा सा काटकर कपड़े के टुकड़े में डाल दिया। उसने उसे बांध दिया और उसे बंडल दे दिया।

बुढ़िया ने सीव मेई से कहा कि वह गट्ठर किसी को न दे। उसने उसे अपने घर पर बंडल खोलने के लिए भी कहा।

सीव मेई गठरी लेकर अपनी झोंपड़ी के पास पहुंची। उसने अपनी मां को बताया कि क्या हुआ था। फिर उसने बुढ़िया की दाढ़ी दिखाने के लिए गठरी खोली। जब हैंडल खोला गया, तो वे उस बंडल में पूरे चीन में बेहतरीन रेशमी धागे को देखकर हैरान रह गए। उस बेहतरीन रेशमी धागे से उन्होंने बेहतरीन रेशम बनाया जो उन्होंने कभी देखा था। उन्होंने यह भी देखा कि रेशम के धागे का बंडल अभी भी पहले जैसा ही आकार का बना हुआ है।

उन्हें जो भाग्य मिला, उससे बूढ़ी औरत और उसकी बेटी, सिव मेई प्रसिद्ध हो गईं और एक साथ खुशी-खुशी रहने लगीं।

इस आसन से यह जान लेना चाहिए कि निःस्वार्थ सेवा से व्यक्ति को यश के साथ-साथ सुख भी प्राप्त होता है। इस कहानी को पढ़कर कोई भी समझ सकता है कि चमत्कार कैसे हुआ और चमत्कार करने वाला व्यक्ति कौन हो सकता है।
