Part I:

In this article the author while discussing the merits and demerits of interview has said that anyone who is literate in today's world must read or listen to an interview at some point or the other. People have different opinions on the interview as some people find it to be the only and most reliable source of truth, while some, especially celebrities, consider it as unnecessary intrusion. He feels that an interview somehow undermines his status and the fact that information related to his life becomes public makes him feel like he has lost a small part of himself.

Lewis Carroll, the creator of Alice in Wonderland, took pride in the fact that he spent time and energy successfully clearing the interviewees. Rudyard Kipling's wife even stated that the interview was unethical in her opinion. H G Wells kept interviewers away but became an active interviewer himself on several occasions.

Joseph Stalin (a Russian revolutionary) and Saul Bolo (novelist and playwright) were notable in their interviews, however, the author believes that, despite all the shortcomings, the interview is a most valuable resource. He quoted Dennis Bryan who said that most of our information comes from asking questions from person to person and the interviewer is really powerful and influential in this regard.

Part II

Part two is a quote from an interview by Umberto Eco. Umberto Eco was a professor at the University of Bologna in Italy. He had a reputation for being a scholar and for his expertise and ideas, semiotics, (the study of signs) literary interpretation, and medieval aesthetics, newspaper articles, and his literary works. His novel, The Name of the Rose, sold over 10 million copies.

The interviewer is Mukunda Padmanabhan from 'The Hindu'. In the interview, Mukund comments that he finds it difficult to understand how Umberto can manage to do everything that he does. Umberto replies that he has mastered the art of making works which he refers to as interstises which are empty spaces. That means he is able to make productive use of every minute of his day.

He also tells Mukunda that he has perfected the art of writing in a narrative style, something he learned when he was doing his doctorate but adopted very late at the age of fifty. In fact, he felt that he had become a novelist by chance because he enjoyed writing in the fiction genre. So from an essayist, he became a novelist. Mukund asked him how he felt despite writing so much non-fiction and doing some valuable work on semiotics. People still refer to him as a famous novelist.

Umberto replied that perhaps as a novelist he reached a large readership, yet he considered himself a serious academician and a university professor who wrote the novel on Sunday. Mukund then asked him if he was surprised to find his novel. Despite being such a serious novel, 'The Name of the Rose' was appreciated by so many people.

The novel's content was a detective novel on the surface, but delved into theology, metaphysics and medieval history. He replied that he was not surprised because the people who had read his novel were people who were not looking for easy experiences. He also said that it was difficult to predict the success of any novel because contrary to all predictions his novel 'The Name of the Rose' achieved great success.

He did not attribute the success of the novel to the theme of medieval history alone, saying that it was a mystery, as is often the case. This interview is a perfect example of how information is received by an interviewer and how the interviewer's response is closely related to the questions posed. Thus, interview is a valuable and authentic means of gathering information.
