The story 'The Earth' is written by H. E. Bates. The story is a biography of Johnson, a farmer, and his son, Benji. The author beautifully Presented the reality of what happens in most families in current life. It begins with the family of Mr. Johnson, a farmer, his wife and their only affectionate son, Benji. Benji appears to be a simple minded person. The story very well depicts the laziness of the parents. It also highlights the growing selfishness and cunningness of their simple-minded son, who eventually drives them away from their home.

Johnson is a farmer who has no land of his own. He has taken about four acres of land on lease for farming, which is meeting the expenses of the family. Benji is mentally underdeveloped. His father goes to a doctor for consultation who advises Johnson to engage his son in some business, especially the poultry business. Accordingly Benji is engaged in that business.

The proceeds from the sale of chicken eggs are deposited in the bank in the name of Benji. When Benji turns twenty one, his father hands over the money deposited in the bank to Benji. Till then Benji's passbook had Rs. Two hundred and thirty pounds. Benji buys some of Mr. Witmore's land with that money and expands his poultry business on the purchased land. He becomes a rich man of his field within few years. He marries Florence while working at their poultry farm against the wishes of his parents. Only then there is a change in his attitude towards his parents.

At first he instructs his parents to shift him to a small room in the house. After some time he stops the arrangement of joint kitchen and leaves his parents in isolation. Later in the end he instructs his parents to shift from their home and settle himself elsewhere. Not only this, he personally drives them away from their house in his car.

Thus the story is a true description of a son's misbehavior and behavior with his parents, which happens in the present.

जॉनसन एक किसान हैं, जिनके पास अपनी कोई जमीन नहीं है। उन्होंने खेती के लिए करीब चार एकड़ जमीन लीज पर ली है जिससे परिवार का खर्चा चल रहा है। बेंजी मानसिक रूप से अविकसित है। उसके पिता परामर्श के लिए एक डॉक्टर के पास जाते हैं जो जॉनसन को सलाह देता है कि वह अपने बेटे को किसी व्यवसाय में लगा दे, विशेष रूप से पोल्ट्री व्यवसाय में। तदनुसार बेंजी उस व्यवसाय में लगा हुआ है।

मुर्गी के अंडे की बिक्री से होने वाली आय बेंजी के नाम बैंक में जमा की जाती है। जब बेंजी इक्कीस वर्ष का हो जाता है तो उसके पिता बैंक में जमा राशि को बेंजी को सौंप देते हैं। तब तक बेंजी की पासबुक में रु. दो सौ तीस पाउंड। बेंजी उस पैसे से मिस्टर विटमोर की कुछ जमीन खरीदता है और खरीदी गई जमीन पर अपने पोल्ट्री व्यवसाय का विस्तार करता है। वह कुछ ही वर्षों में अपने क्षेत्र का एक अमीर आदमी बन जाता है। वह अपने माता-पिता की इच्छा के विरुद्ध अपने पोल्ट्री फार्म में काम करते हुए फ्लोरेंस से शादी करता है। तभी माता-पिता के प्रति उसके दृष्टिकोण में परिवर्तन आता है।

पहले तो वह अपने माता-पिता को घर के एक छोटे से कमरे में शिफ्ट करने का निर्देश देता है। कुछ समय बाद वह संयुक्त रसोई की व्यवस्था बंद कर देता है और अपने माता-पिता को अलग-थलग छोड़ देता है। बाद में अंत में वह अपने माता-पिता को अपने घर से शिफ्ट होने और खुद को कहीं और बसने का निर्देश देता है। इतना ही नहीं, वह व्यक्तिगत रूप से उन्हें अपनी कार से उनके घर से भगा देते हैं।

इस प्रकार कहानी एक बेटे के अपने माता-पिता के साथ गलत व्यवहार और व्यवहार का सही वर्णन है, जो वर्तमान में होता है।
