Madanka was a young merchant living in Ujjain. As he lost his father, his mother raised him with great love and affection. Unfortunately, he turned out to be a vagabond. Hoping he will return to normal and settle down, his mother marries him to a girl but it gets worse. One day he left his home leaving his mother and pregnant wife. His wife gave birth to a son and he was named Ratanka. They were also raised with affection and care and given a good education. When he was ten years old, his grandmother asked him to do some business to earn his living. He advised her to go to Yakshadatta and borrow some money from him. Yakshadatta, a wealthy merchant living in a neighboring village, lent money to poor but capable persons. Ratanka met Yakshadatta and requested him to lend some money for business. He promised Yakshadatta that he would repay the amount soon. Yakshadatta pointed to a dead mouse and told Ratanka that this was the capital he could lend to her. He also told that a wise person can earn lakhs from that dead mouse. Ratnanka took the dead mouse and placed it in a cup made of leaves. A merchant bought it to feed his cat and gave him a handful of Bengalgrams. Ratnanka soaked Banglagram by taking her home. Then he put some salt and pepper in the gram. He offered some soaked gram and cold water to the hungry and thirsty woodcutter. They were pleased with his service and gave him two pieces of firewood each. Ratnanka sold the firewood in the city for two rupees. He gave one rupee to his grandmother as savings and bought Bengalgram with another rupee. Then he offered soaked gram and cold water to the woodcutter. In this way he collected several vehicle-heavy fuels within a month. When the city was short of firewood, he sold the firewood and earned a hundred gold coins. He became one of the prominent merchants of that city within two years. Then he wanted to show his gratitude to Yakshadatta. He got a mouse made of gold and took it in a procession to the residence of Yakshadatta. Ratnanka narrated her success story to Yakshadatta and requested him to accept the golden mouse as repayment of the loan and as a token of his gratitude. Yakshadatta was pleased with Ratnaka's wisdom and gratitude.

मदनंका उज्जैन में रहने वाला एक युवा व्यापारी था। जैसे ही उसने अपने पिता को खो दिया, उसकी माँ ने उसे बड़े प्यार और प्यार से पाला। दुर्भाग्य से, वह एक आवारा निकला। उम्मीद है कि वह सामान्य हो जाएगा और घर बसा लेगा, उसकी माँ ने उसकी शादी एक लड़की से कर दी लेकिन वह और भी बुरा हो गया। एक दिन वह अपनी माँ और गर्भवती पत्नी को छोड़कर अपना घर छोड़ गया। उनकी पत्नी ने एक पुत्र को जन्म दिया और उनका नाम रत्नांक रखा गया। उन्हें भी स्नेह और देखभाल के साथ पाला गया और अच्छी शिक्षा दी गई। जब वह दस साल का था, तो उसकी दादी ने उसे अपनी जीविका कमाने के लिए कुछ व्यवसाय करने के लिए कहा। उसने उसे यक्षदत्त के पास जाने और उससे कुछ पैसे उधार लेने की सलाह दी। पड़ोसी गाँव में रहने वाला एक धनी व्यापारी यक्षदत्त ने गरीब लेकिन सक्षम व्यक्तियों को धन उधार दिया। रत्नंका ने यक्षदत्त से मुलाकात की और उनसे व्यापार के लिए कुछ पैसे उधार देने का अनुरोध किया। उसने यक्षदत्त से वादा किया कि वह जल्द ही राशि चुका देगा। यक्षदत्त ने एक मरे हुए चूहे की ओर इशारा किया और रत्नंका से कहा कि यह वह राजधानी है जो वह उसे उधार दे सकता है। उन्होंने यह भी बताया कि एक बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति उस मरे हुए चूहे से लाखों कमा सकता है। रत्नांका ने मरे हुए चूहे को लेकर एक पत्ते से बने प्याले में रख दिया। एक व्यापारी ने इसे अपनी बिल्ली को खिलाने के लिए खरीदा और उसे एक मुट्ठी बेंगालग्राम दिया। रत्नांका ने बंगलाग्राम को घर ले जाकर भिगो दिया। फिर उसने चने में थोड़ा नमक और काली मिर्च डाल दी। उसने भूखे-प्यासे लकड़हारे को कुछ भीगे हुए चने और ठंडे पानी की पेशकश की। वे उसकी सेवा से प्रसन्न हुए और उसे दो-दो जलाऊ लकड़ी के टुकड़े दिए। रत्नांका ने जलाऊ लकड़ी को शहर में दो रुपये में बेच दिया। उसने अपनी दादी को बचत के रूप में एक रुपया दिया और दूसरे रुपये से बंगालग्राम खरीदा। फिर उन्होंने लकड़हारे को भीगे हुए चने और ठंडे पानी का भोग लगाया। इस तरह उसने एक महीने के भीतर कई गाड़ी-भारी ईंधन एकत्र किया। जब शहर में जलाऊ लकड़ी की कमी थी, तो उसने जलाऊ लकड़ी बेच दी और सौ सोने के सिक्के अर्जित किए। वह दो साल के भीतर उस शहर के प्रमुख व्यापारियों में से एक बन गया। तब वह यक्षदत्त के प्रति अपना आभार प्रकट करना चाहता था। उन्होंने सोने का एक चूहा बनवाया और उसे एक जुलूस में यक्षदत्त के निवास तक ले गए। रत्नांका ने यक्षदत्त को अपनी सफलता की कहानी सुनाई और उनसे ऋण की अदायगी के रूप में और अपनी कृतज्ञता के प्रतीक के रूप में सोने के चूहे को स्वीकार करने का अनुरोध किया। रत्नांका की बुद्धि और कृतज्ञता से यक्षदत्त प्रसन्न हुए।
