The story begins with a description of the boot shop; Above were the nameplate 'Gessler Brothers' and some shoes displayed on the window. They make shoes to order. The narrator then narrates a meeting he had with Mr. Gesler. He says that it was not possible to visit him much as the shoes made by him last a very long time and are the best of their kind. One day the narrator visits his shop to pick up a pair of Russian leather shoes. Mr. Gessler retreats upstairs and a short time later comes back holding a piece of golden Russian leather.

After the narrator approves, he says that he will get his shoes the next fortnight. One day the narrator visits his boot shop and tells him that the latest pair of shoes he got from Kreak. After a long pause, Mr. Gesler asked him to bring the shoes. He assures that if he cannot repair them, he will return the money. Another day he goes to Gesler Brothers to order a new pair, wearing a pair of shoes he had bought in an emergency from a large firm. Mr Gesler immediately recognizes that the shoes are not made by him.

He touches a particular spot on the narrator's shoe, where it is not comfortable for the narrator and rightly predicts that it must be hurting there. He expresses his contempt for big firms that sell their substandard quality products to attract customers through glossy impressive advertisements. The author then explains to him the circumstances under which he had to buy those shoes. The new shoes lasted about two years. And on their next journey they face quite a setback. When he enters the store, he sees the younger Gesler brother who informs him of the elder Gesler's death.

That day he orders several pairs. These take more time to make but the quality is even better than the previous ones. Soon after, the narrator goes abroad and returns after more than a year. The first shop he visits is Mr Gesler's. Mr Gesler, now seventy-five years old, is unable to recognize him at first. The narrator gives a big order. The wait is longer than ever but the quality only gets better. After a week, while walking down the small alley, the narrator decides to go inside and tell Mr. Gesler that the shoes are perfect.

But when he goes to the place where the shop was, the nameplate is no longer there. Distraught, he walks into the shop and is greeted by a young English face. The narrator inquires about Mr. Gesler and learns of the death of the younger Gesler. The narrator was shocked to hear this.

The young man explains to her that Gesler died of hunger; He used to put himself so much into making shoes that he forgot everything else. All the money went to rent and leather. Fate was quite clear from the start. But both the narrator and the young man agree that the Gessler brothers made good quality shoes.
