Oliver, an orphaned boy, is brought up in a children's home. Mr. Bumble, Beadle informs Oliver that he has to appear before the board in one go. Since he had no idea of a live board, he was dazed and not sure whether he should laugh or cry. Mr. Bumble took him to a large white-washed room where eight or ten fat gentlemen were sitting around a table. Mr. Bumble ordered Oliver to bow before the board. Seeing no board other than the table, Oliver leaned on the table. Seeing them, he got scared and started trembling. Beadle patted him on the back with a cane and he wept. The gentleman in the high chair asked Oliver if he knew he was an orphan. Oliver could not understand her question as he had no idea about the orphan. The gentlemen reminded Oliver that he was raised by the parish and asked him to pray for him and take care of him like a Christian. The gentleman in the white waistcoat ordered Oliver to start picking Occam the next morning at six o'clock. Oliver made a low bow and hurried to a large ward and told himself to sleep on a rough, hard bed. The board members were very intelligent and philosophical persons. He found that the workplace was a regular place of public entertainment for the poorer classes. He was of the opinion that the poor should starve outside the workplace or gradually inside it. He decided that the inmates of the workhouse would be given thin porridge thrice a day with onions twice a week. As a result, the number of inmates at the workhouse dwindled and they shrunk in size. Oliver and his companions endured three months of slow starvation torture. They went wild with hunger. One day a tall boy announced that he would eat the boy who sleeps next to him unless he was given extra ghee. A council was held and it was decided that Oliver should ask the master for more. That evening porridge was served and they ate it. The boys glanced at Oliver and nudged him. Oliver went to the Master and requested him for something more gruesome. The master got angry and hit Oliver on the head with a ladle. He informed this to Birbal. Mr. Bumble went to the Beadle gentlemen's room and reported it. The gentleman in the white vest said that the boy would be hanged. No one contradicted his opinion and Oliver was ordered to be imprisoned immediately. The next morning a bill was pasted offering five pounds to those who would take Oliver as an apprentice in any trade, business or profession.
