1. Cutting my long hair - zitkala-sa:
Zitkala-sa's The Cutting of My Long Hair is a short story about racial discrimination. The story is based on true events that happened to the author at one point in time. The narrator remembers her hard days at a boarding school in Europe. The narrator is a little girl of Indian origin. She looks different there and she doesn't understand their language, English. He remembers his first day being quite cold...with snow all around the ground.

She is in a dining hall where she is disturbed by the constant murmur and chirping of students' shoes. The activities of the students in the boarding school are guided by the ringing of bells. The narrator feels uncomfortable with all this arrangement... because she knows when to sit and when to eat and when to stand. She starts crying in fear. She is not alone there. She sees a row of boys entering the dining hall at the opposite door and sees three boys who are of her caste, i.e. Native Indian. The boys are also feeling uneasy and helpless on this foreign soil.

In the midst of all this confusion, she is an elderly lady, probably the warden; She is a pale-faced woman with a strange air. His eyes are fixed on this new girl. The next day, late in the morning, his friend Judwin comes up to him and says that the pale-faced woman was talking about plucking her long and heavy hair.

To this, the narrator becomes upset, as he was told by his mother that short and wrinkled hairs are for lost warriors and cowards. At this time, she remembers her mother and the values she taught. The narrator decides to drop some resistance before surrendering to cutting his hair.

As soon as people start calling her name, she goes upstairs to a dark room and hides under a bed but to no avail. People come looking for him and pull him out and in the end, he has cut his hair short. So, in this story, we see that there is color discrimination, the narrator was brown, being a native Indian and the boarding school where he was enrolled was in Europe where mostly white people lived and ruled the land according to their protocol. were. Thus, they had no option but to follow their rules and regulations.

2. We are human too - Bama:
Bama's We To Are Human Beings is the story of centuries of untouchability in India. The narrator of this story is himself an untouchable. She remembers her childhood when she was not aware of the social discrimination that exists in the world, but one day she sees something bizarre that changes her perception of the outside world that exists beyond her smallest detail.

The narrator is a third grade student and usually, after school, she reaches home quite late as she is fascinated by the colors of the outside world that exists between her home and the school. She comes across a whole market and crossing some streets which are always full of different colorful activities and so on.

One day while returning home, she sees an elderly tall man from their street carrying a packet with a string, and that too with utmost care and care. Crops are being beaten in his street and the landlord is sitting on a stone step. The tall man gives the packet to the landlord, who then opens the packet and eats the vadai from it. The narrator feels that this is an act of comedy.

She informs her elder brother Annan about the incident on reaching home. He tells her that this happens because of social differences. Those who belong to the upper caste, no lower caste person likes to touch them, by doing so they feel polluted. Knowing this terrible difference the narrator gets angry and she expresses her anger by saying that her people should not work for these upper caste people.

Annan is the one who encourages her to study well so that she always stays above this social hue and cry. Annan explains to her that good education will help her rise above the fractured society which in turn will help her to overcome the social barriers. Taking Annan's advice very seriously, the narrator studies hard and comes first in his class, so many of his classmates approach him for help and appreciate his talent.

The story takes place in Tamil Nadu and depicts a picture of India's untouchables as they struggle to live freely or roam freely wherever they want. It is also true that education removes the darkness created by superstitions and social barriers. Thus, the narrator is absolutely right in saying that education has the power to lift people above their miseries and other obstacles.
