Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam was born on October 15, 1929, to Venkata Chalamaiah and Varalakshmi. He was survived by his wife Swarajya Lakshmi, two sons and three daughters. He faced many difficulties in his childhood. He had a strong desire to learn Kuchipudi. Although his teacher ridiculed him, he did not lose his interest in Kuchipudi. His passionate dream was to elevate an art form which he had learned from his great gurus. He decided to dedicate his life to the promotion of that art form. Therefore, when he was eighteen, he left his home for Madras. He went till the whole of Madras. On his long way, he fed himself on bananas and water.

The Kuchipudi dance form originated in the village of Kuchipudi. This art was performed in temples during annual festivals and for long periods in the streets. Although it was adapted by great gurus like Vedantam Lakshminarayana, Chinta Krishna Murthy, it was not much popular. It did not get the same recognition as other classical dances. Dr. Vempati learned the difficult aspects of the Kuchipudi style from Tadepalli Peraiah Sastri and Vedantam Lakshminarayan Sastri. He wanted to make Kuchipudi popular all over the world. He rose to fame as a choreographer in the Telugu film industry by composing dance sequences in the films 'Narthansala', 'Devadasu' and 'Pandava Vanavasam'. He founded the Kuchipudi Kala Academy in Madras in 1963. Dr. Vempati composed and choreographed 180 solo items and 15 dance plays. Eminent artists Shantha Rao, Yamini Krishna Murthy, Vyjayanthimala Bali, Hema Malini, Manju Bhargavi, Shobha Naidu, Bala Kondala Rao and Daggubati Purandeshwari were all disciples of Dr. Vempati.

Dr. Vempati was awarded the 'Padma Bhushan' by the Government of India. In 1980, Andhra University awarded him an honorary doctorate and Sri Venkateswara University awarded him D. Lit. in 1983. The Mayor of Miami, USA presented him the 'Golden Key' in 1981. She was awarded the 'Raja-Lakshmi' award. TTD made him 'Asthana Natyaacharya' in 1976. He lived an illustrious life of 83 years and passed away on 29 July 2012. Rest of the world Kuchipudi and Dr. Looks at Vempati's splendid work with respect. He is rightly called a 'Maestro with a mission' as he continues to be a source of inspiration to those who work for Kuchipudi.
