Thomas Stearns Eliot in his poem "Macavity: The Mystery Cat" describes a mysterious cat of an extremely villainous nature. This cat is known as 'Hidden Paw' because he is the criminal mastermind who defies the law. He is also a mystery figure to the world's specialized detective agencies such as Scotland Yard and Flying Squad. These agencies had accepted their defeat by this clever cat and are therefore considered to be the 'hoax' of Scotland Yard.

'When they get to the crime scene - McVitie isn't there.' McVity is too smart to be caught and he is nowhere near the crime scene. The poet says that Macavity defies all human laws and also the law of gravitation. His leverage is so powerful that it stuns a mystic. But when you get to the crime scene, McVity isn't there. The poet says we can find him in the basement or we can see him in the air but McVity is not there.

TS Eliot describes Macavity as a ginger cat who is both tall and thin. He can be recognized by his eyes which are deeply sunken. There are lines laden with thoughts on this cat's forehead; He has a head that is highly domed while his coat is messy and his mustache is open. Macavity moves like a snake and is fully awake whenever it makes the mistake of falling asleep.

The poet says that there is no one like Macavity. He is the devil in the disguise of a cat; He is the demon of evil. One can meet him in the street or square but when the crime is discovered, McVity is not.

In the last stanza of the poem, it is said that there has never been a cat of such deceit and cleverness. Macavity is always ready with an alibi or two, and Macavity is not when crimes are discovered. TS talks about Eliot Mungojeri and other evil cats named Gridlebones who are nothing but agents of Macavity.

थॉमस स्टर्न्स एलियट ने अपनी कविता "मैकाविटी: द मिस्ट्री कैट" में अत्यंत खलनायक प्रकृति की एक रहस्यमय बिल्ली का वर्णन किया है। इस बिल्ली को 'हिडन पॉ' के नाम से जाना जाता है क्योंकि वह आपराधिक मास्टरमाइंड है जो कानून की अवहेलना करता है। वह स्कॉटलैंड यार्ड और फ्लाइंग स्क्वॉड जैसी दुनिया की विशेष जासूसी एजेंसियों के लिए भी एक रहस्यपूर्ण व्यक्ति है। इन एजेंसियों ने इस चतुर बिल्ली द्वारा अपनी हार स्वीकार कर ली थी और इसलिए उन्हें स्कॉटलैंड यार्ड का 'चकमा' माना जाता है।

'जब वे अपराध के दृश्य पर पहुँचते हैं- मैकविटी वहाँ नहीं है।' मैकविटी पकड़े जाने के लिए बहुत चालाक है और वह अपराध स्थल के पास कहीं नहीं है। कवि का कहना है कि मैकविटी सभी मानवीय नियमों और गुरुत्वाकर्षण के नियम की भी अवहेलना करती है। उसका उत्तोलन इतना शक्तिशाली है कि यह एक फकीर को हतप्रभ कर देता है। लेकिन जब आप अपराध स्थल पर पहुंचते हैं, तो मैकविटी वहां नहीं होती है। कवि कहता है कि हम उसे तहखाने में खोज सकते हैं या हम हवा में देख सकते हैं लेकिन मैकविटी वहां नहीं है।

टीएस एलियट मैकाविटी को एक अदरक बिल्ली के रूप में वर्णित करता है जो लंबी और पतली दोनों है। उसे उसकी आँखों से पहचाना जा सकता है जो गहराई से धँसी हुई हैं। इस बिल्ली के माथे पर विचारों से लदी रेखाएँ हैं; उसके पास एक सिर है जो अत्यधिक गुंबददार है जबकि उसका कोट गन्दा है और उसकी मूंछें खुली हुई हैं। मैकाविटी सांप की तरह चलती है और जब भी उसे सो जाने की गलती होती है, तो वह पूरी तरह से जाग जाता है।

कवि कहता है कि मैकविटी जैसा कोई नहीं है। वह बिल्ली के भेष में शैतान है; वह दुष्टता का राक्षस है। कोई उससे गली या चौक में मिल सकता है लेकिन जब अपराध का पता चलता है, तो मैकविटी नहीं होती है।

कविता के अंतिम श्लोक में कहा गया है कि इस तरह के छल और चतुराई की बिल्ली कभी नहीं रही। मैकाविटी हमेशा एक या दो ऐलिबी के साथ तैयार रहती है और जब अपराधों का पता चलता है तो मैकाविटी नहीं होती है। टीएस एलियट मुंगोजेरी और ग्रिडलबोन नाम की अन्य दुष्ट बिल्लियों के बारे में बात करते हैं जो मैकाविटी के एजेंट के अलावा और कुछ नहीं हैं।
