Life in dinghy cells and working close to hot furnaces causes these children to become blind when they become adults. Burdened with debt, they can neither think nor find any way to come out of this trap.

Politicians, middlemen, policemen and bureaucrats will all hinder their progress. The women of the house consider it their fate and simply follow the tradition. Mukesh is different from the rest of the people there. He dreams of becoming a motor mechanic. The garage is far from his house but he will be able to walk. She meets Mukesh in Firozabad.

लेखिका हर सुबह साहेब को अपने पड़ोस में 'सोना' तलाशते हुए देखती है। कूड़ा-करकट बड़ों के लिए जीवित रहने का साधन है और बच्चों के लिए यह आश्चर्य में लिपटा हुआ है। बच्चों को उसमें से एक या दो सिक्के मिलते हैं। इन लोगों की इच्छाएं और महत्वाकांक्षाएं होती हैं, लेकिन उन्हें हासिल करने का तरीका नहीं पता होता है। ऐसी बहुत सी चीजें हैं जो उनके लिए पहुंच से बाहर हैं, जैसे जूते, टेनिस और इसी तरह की अन्य चीजें। बाद में साहेब एक चाय की दुकान में शामिल हो जाते हैं जहाँ वे 800 रुपये और सारा भोजन कमा सकते थे। नौकरी ने उसकी आजादी छीन ली है।

II- मुझे कार चलाना है।
दूसरा भाग मुकेश के जीवन से संबंधित है, जो चूड़ी बनाने वालों के परिवार से ताल्लुक रखता है। फिरोजाबाद अपने कांच उड़ाने वाले उद्योग के लिए जाना जाता है। इस धंधे में करीब 20,000 बच्चे लगे हुए हैं और यहां बाल श्रम पर रोक लगाने वाले कानून की जानकारी नहीं है। रहने की स्थिति और काम करने का माहौल एक दयनीय कहानी है। डिंगी कोशिकाओं में जीवन और गर्म भट्टियों के करीब काम करने से ये बच्चे वयस्क होने पर अंधे हो जाते हैं। कर्ज के बोझ तले दबे, वे इस जाल से बाहर आने के लिए न तो सोच सकते हैं और न ही कोई रास्ता खोज सकते हैं।

राजनेता, बिचौलिए, पुलिसकर्मी और नौकरशाह सभी उनकी प्रगति के रास्ते में बाधा डालेंगे। घर की महिलाएं इसे अपना भाग्य मानती हैं और बस परंपरा का पालन करती हैं। मुकेश वहां के बाकी लोगों से अलग हैं. वह मोटर मैकेनिक बनने का सपना देखता है। गैरेज उसके घर से बहुत दूर है लेकिन वह चल पाएगा। वह फिरोजाबाद में मुकेश से मिलती है।
