This story describes Gandhi's struggle for the poor farmers of Champaran. Most of the cultivable land in Champaran district in those days was divided into large estates owned by the British and worked by Indian tenants. The major commercial crop was indigo. The landlords forced all the cultivators to plant 15% of their indigo and surrendered the entire indigo crop as rent. This was done by long-term contract.

When Germany developed synthetic indigo, the British no longer needed the indigo crop. He demanded compensation to free the farmers from the 15% settlement. Some illiterate farmers agreed but others refused. Due to the long-standing injustice of the landlords, one of the sharecroppers named Rajkumar Shukla met Gandhi in this regard and forced him to go to Champaran.

Then both of them boarded the train for Patna city of Bihar. From there Shukla took her to the house of a lawyer named Rajendra Prasad. Mahatma Gandhi's modest and simple dress made the servants think of him as just another poor farmer. He did the survey before taking any important step to get justice to those farmers. This was the time when the British government punished those who had given shelter to national leaders or protesters in any condition.

Gandhi's arrival and the nature of his mission spread like wildfire. Many lawyers and farmer groups came in large numbers in his support. The lawyers accepted the fact that their charges were high and it would be troubling for a poor farmer.

Gandhi reprimanded them for collecting huge fees from the sharecroppers. He emphasized on counseling as it would give enough confidence to the farmers to fight their fears. He managed to get justice after a year long fight for the farmers. He also made arrangements for education, health and sanitation for the families of poor farmers. He taught them the lesson of self-reliance.

यह कहानी चंपारण के गरीब किसानों के लिए गांधी के संघर्ष का वर्णन करती है। उन दिनों चंपारण जिले की अधिकांश कृषि योग्य भूमि अंग्रेजों के स्वामित्व वाली और भारतीय किरायेदारों द्वारा काम की जाने वाली बड़ी संपत्ति में विभाजित थी। प्रमुख व्यावसायिक फसल नील थी। जमींदारों ने सभी काश्तकारों को अपनी नील का 15% लगाने के लिए मजबूर किया और पूरे इंडिगो फसल को किराए के रूप में आत्मसमर्पण कर दिया। यह दीर्घकालिक अनुबंध द्वारा किया गया था।

जब जर्मनी ने सिंथेटिक इंडिगो विकसित किया था तब अंग्रेजों को अब इंडिगो की फसल की जरूरत नहीं थी। किसानों को 15% समझौते से मुक्त करने के लिए उन्होंने मुआवजे की मांग की। कुछ अनपढ़ किसान सहमत हुए लेकिन अन्य ने मना कर दिया। जमींदारों के दीर्घकालिक अन्याय के कारण राजकुमार शुक्ला नामक बटाईदारों में से एक ने इस संबंध में गांधी से मुलाकात की और उन्हें चंपारण जाने के लिए मजबूर किया।

फिर वे दोनों बिहार के पटना शहर के लिए ट्रेन में सवार हुए। वहां से शुक्ल उसे राजेंद्र प्रसाद नाम के एक वकील के घर ले गए। महात्मा गांधी की विनम्र और साधारण पोशाक ने नौकरों को उन्हें एक और गरीब किसान के रूप में समझा। उन्होंने उन किसानों को न्याय दिलाने के लिए कोई भी महत्वपूर्ण कदम उठाने से पहले सर्वेक्षण किया। यह वह समय था जब ब्रिटिश सरकार ने उन लोगों को दंडित किया जिन्होंने किसी भी हालत में राष्ट्रीय नेताओं या प्रदर्शनकारियों को आश्रय दिया था।

गांधी का आगमन और उनके मिशन की प्रकृति जंगल की आग की तरह फैल गई। उनके समर्थन में कई वकील और किसान समूह बड़ी संख्या में आए। वकीलों ने इस तथ्य को स्वीकार किया कि उनके आरोप अधिक थे और एक गरीब किसान के लिए यह कष्टप्रद होगा।

गांधी ने बटाईदारों से बड़ी फीस वसूल करने के लिए उन्हें फटकार लगाई। उन्होंने परामर्श पर जोर दिया क्योंकि इससे किसानों को अपने डर से लड़ने के लिए पर्याप्त आत्मविश्वास मिलेगा। किसानों के लिए एक साल की लंबी लड़ाई के बाद वह न्याय पाने में कामयाब रहे। उन्होंने गरीब किसानों के परिवारों के लिए शिक्षा, स्वास्थ्य और स्वच्छता की व्यवस्था भी की। उन्होंने उन्हें आत्मनिर्भरता का पाठ पढ़ाया।
