This text presents excerpts from a face-to-face interview between Jorge Luis Borges and Roberto Alifano. Jorge Luis Borges was an Argentine short-story writer, essayist, poet and translator who became partially blind at the age of 55.
In this interview, Borges shares his thoughts on the importance of 'books' in the age of globalized electronic communication. Incidentally, Borges, in addition to expressing his feelings about his 'mother' and his 'blindness', also shares his thoughts/comments about some other subjects such as poetry, allegory and literature. The interviewer, Elifano, asks questions about each of the topics described above and Borges answers them with his thoughts.

The interview begins with the first question, 'What was your first literary reading?' In response, Borges told him that the first literary work he read was 'Grimm's Fairy Tales' in the English version. Borges then tells his interviewer that he learned more from his father's library than from high school or university.

Alifano then asks Borges to talk about his mother, Donna Leonor. Borges tells him that his mother was an extraordinary person who showed him a great deal of kindness in her life. He then continues, telling the interviewer in a confessional tone that he feels guilty for not being a happy man for giving his mother the happiness she deserved. He also feels that he should have shown a better understanding of his mother.

Then, he generalizes the issue, saying that it is true for all children that when their mother dies, the children feel that they took her (when she was alive) as if they were the moon or the sun or the weather. and feel that they have mistreated their mothers. However, this truth does not come upon such children before the death of their mother. Then Borges says that his mother was a wise and kind woman who had no enemies.

Then, Alifano apologizes to Borges and asks what blindness means to him. Borges tells him in response that blindness is a way of life that is not entirely miserable. He says that as a writer he generally believes that all individuals should think that everything that happens to them is a resource. He believes that all things are given to us for a purpose and an artist should feel it more intensely. Borges is of the opinion that everything that happens to us, including humiliation, misfortune and embarrassment, is given to us in the form of clay as a raw material to shape our art.

Alifano quoted from Homer's 'The Odyssey' supports Borges's view. The lines quoted by Alifano are taken from this poem, in which the poet tells the reader that it is the gods who make man's life sad so that he can sing songs for generations to come. This idea is based on the belief that men write songs to calm the mind when they remember their sorrows.

After hearing Alifano's quote from 'The Odyssey', Borges added a little more to evoke the same idea of being disturbed by the many undesirable events of man's life. Borges told Alifano that he said in one of his poems that 'disgrace', 'misfortune' and 'discord' were given to us that we can change them and use our pitiable circumstances to do things that last forever. Let's go Then he quotes from Goethe, "He who is near passes away". Here again, Borges is referring to his loss of vision.

In the line quoted here, Goethe is referring to the evening twilight, when the things closest to us seem to move away from our eyes. Borges is quoting this line to tell Alifano that the visual world has gone away from his eyes forever. Borges then says that his vision has been replaced by several other things. He then tells Alifano that it is his duty to accept blindness and still enjoy it as far as possible. So, he tells Alifano that he still pretends he's not blind and buys books to fill his house.

Alifano, hearing him mention 'the books', asks Borges to speak about the subject of the books. In response, Borges tells Alifano that he had a very strange dream in which he saw the library of Alexandria burning, with its innumerable amounts of flames engulfed. He then asks Alifano if he believes his dreams have any meaning. Alifano replies that it may have some meaning, but then continues his interview by asking Borges if he has ever thought of writing a book on the history of the 'book'.

Borges tells him that he will not be able to write a book like this, although it is an excellent idea. He wonders whether an eighty-three year old man could set up such a project for himself. Coincidentally, Borges tells him that he will keep it in his mind. Borges then tells Alifano that Spengler has already made an effort in this regard in his Decline of the West.

In this book Spengler makes a remarkable commentary on books. Then Alifano recounted the words of Bernard Shaw

Borges (in one of his essays), in which he declares that "every book is written by a spirit worth re-reading".

Borges agrees

tells him and her that a book is beyond its author's intention, which may not be correct. Borges declares that each book requires something else, which is not easy to understand. Then he gives the example of an ancient text. He tells Alifano that when one reads an ancient book he feels as if he was reading about a time that was written from that day to the present day.

Borges concludes by saying that a book always carries something sacred, something mortal, something magical that brings happiness. Then, Alifano asked Borges to define the poem. In response, Borges states that poetry is so intimate and so essential that it cannot be defined without simplifying. If one tries to define poetry it will be like trying to define the color yellow, love and the fall of leaves in autumn. Borges then says that poetry is not poetry, but it is an aesthetic work, the poetic work is when the poet writes it when the reader reads it and it is always in a different way. Then he adds and says that when there is a poetic action, we become aware of it. He then concludes by declaring that the poem is a magical, mysterious and obscure, though not incomprehensible, phenomenon.

He feels that the poet should be considered a failure if one does not realize the poetic phenomenon upon reading it. Alifano then goes on to explain to Borges that the important thing in the art of poetry is to find the exact words. Borges agrees with him. He then says that the exact words evoke emotion. He quoted the line "this quiet dust belonged to gentlemen and ladies" from Emily Dickinson's poem to illustrate his statement.

Elifano then asks Borges to explain the concept of metaphors. Borges told him in reply that true metaphors have existed since time immemorial. Then he tells her that he has sometimes thought of reducing all the metaphors to five or six essential metaphors.

Borges is of the opinion that these essential metaphors are found in all literature, apart from many others that are eccentric. Borges then tells him that the poet has to search for metaphors, even if they already exist.

Finally, Elifano asked Borges to comment on the statement "Modern developments in communication will replace books with something more dynamic that will require less time than reading".

Borges tells him that the books will never disappear. Then, he declared that of the many inventions of man, the book is undoubtedly the most amazing, and all others are extensions of our body. He is of the opinion that the telephone is an extension of our voice; Binoculars and microscopes are extensions of our vision, and swords and plows are extensions of our arms. He claims that only the book is an extension of our imagination and memory.

Alifano then asked Borges his reactions to his own statement, 'Literature is a dream'. Borges aloud tells him it is true. He reiterates his statement 'Literature is a dream', and says that it is a 'controlled dream'. He then says that it is his belief that almost everything we are is indebted to literature; What we were, and what we will be and ends by saying that "our past is nothing but a sequence of dreams." He concluded by remarking that there can be no difference between dreaming and remembering the past. Then he declared, "Books are the great memory of all centuries and their function is irreplaceable. If books disappear, history will be erased and surely man will disappear."
