It was the season of Hilsa-fish and the fishermen, fishermen and all across the state were talking about it. The fishermen were selling the fish at the lowest rates ever. Even in front of the king, the courtier could not stop himself from talking about Hilsa-fish. The king got angry at first but later regretted losing his temper. He then frankly challenged whether one could avoid talking about Hilsa-Fish even for five minutes.

Having bought fish from the market, had to come all the way to the palace and saw that no one was talking about the fish in his hand. Gopal accepted the challenge. He cut his beard in half, put on torn clothes and left for the market. He bought Hilsa-fish and started walking along the road towards the palace. Whoever saw him thought him insane and started talking about him instead of the hilsa-fish in his hand.

At last, he reached the palace. He was stopped by the gatekeepers at the gate. Gopal started dancing and singing loudly there. Finally, he was called in by the king. The king had already forgotten about the challenge. Gopal reminded him of the challenge. The king remembered this and congratulated Gopal for winning the challenge, that is, achieving the impossible.

बाजार से मछली खरीदकर पूरे रास्ते महल में आना पड़ा और देखा कि कोई उसके हाथ में मछली की बात नहीं कर रहा है। गोपाल ने चुनौती स्वीकार की। उसने अपनी दाढ़ी आधी कर ली, फटे-पुराने कपड़े पहन लिए और बाजार के लिए निकल पड़ा। उसने हिल्सा-मछली खरीदी और सड़क के किनारे महल की ओर चलने लगा। जिसने भी उसे देखा, उसे पागल समझ लिया और उसके हाथ में हिल्सा-मछली के बजाय उसके बारे में बात करना शुरू कर दिया।

अंत में, वह महल में पहुंच गया। गेट पर उसे द्वारपालों ने रोक लिया। गोपाल वहाँ जोर-जोर से नाचने-गाने लगा। अंत में, उसे राजा द्वारा अंदर बुलाया गया। राजा चुनौती के बारे में पहले ही भूल चुका था। गोपाल ने उसे चुनौती की याद दिलाई। राजा ने इसे याद किया और गोपाल को चुनौती जीतने, यानी असंभव को हासिल करने के लिए बधाई दी।
