This is a painting. It recounts the story of freedom through pictures. It also explains the idea that led to the first war of independence in 1857. At a function in Delhi, Lata Mangeshkar sang the patriotic song "Ae Mere Watan Ke Log". He called upon Indians to remember the sacrifices of Indian freedom fighters with tearful eyes. The English East India Company came to India for trade.

But with its superior weapons and clever diplomacy, it expanded its power in the 18th century. Indian princes were divided and short-sighted. The people in India did not have peace due to the frequent quarrels between the states of the country. They sought the help of English merchants to defeat each other. These rivalries helped the company defeat and subdue the Indian princes one by one.

A visionary ruler like the heroic Tipu Sultan of Mysore fought till his death while fighting the British. Now the Indians reacted to the conquests made by the English Company. Some of them thanked God as well as the British for restoring peace in the country and stopping the looting. He said that his fate was connected with the British.

But there were some who felt sad. They complained that their kings had been killed or dethroned by the white man. No doubt some kings were bad, but they were Indians after all. They had become slaves under the white rulers.
Some religious leaders supported social evils like untouchability and child marriage. He forbade crossing the sea and going abroad. Some even said that women are to be blamed for all the miseries. The truth was that Indians had lost their self-respect. White people hated him and distrusted him.

The British were the first traders. His aim was to make quick profit. He imposed heavy taxes on the farmers. He sent many farmers to jail for failing to pay the outstanding tax. They destroyed local Indian industries so that TCF could sell goods manufactured in England. He exempted all goods imported from England from duty. Thus they ruined the Indian artisans and their businesses.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy, a learned social reformer from Bengal understood what was wrong with the country. He called upon the people to feel proud of their ancient culture. And rid the society of fanatical superstitions. He said that all religions preach the same thing.

He understood the importance of science and modern knowledge. He started newspapers but the British stopped him in 1823. He crossed the sea and went to England to see what made the British so powerful. After that he took the middle path.
