Early man must have found fire dangerous and frightening. Fire may have been a mystery to man since ancient times but what is known today is the result of a chemical reaction. It is used in our house for daily cooking, candle lighting etc. but if it gets out of control it can cause damage to life, homes and even forests. A fire can be brought under control by removing any three things that are necessary to start a fire. This can be stopped immediately by draining the fuel.

The fire can also be controlled by cutting off the oxygen supply, for this sometimes blankets are thrown over the burning objects. Another way is to lower the flash temperature; This can be done by sprinkling water which lowers the temperature. However, water cannot be used to extinguish an electrical fire or an oil fire. A carbon dioxide extinguisher is the best way to control an electrical fire.

Earlier people used to form human chains and put buckets of water from ponds or wells into the fire. These days there are trained personnel to handle it. A trained team of firefighters is called a fire brigade. They hire skilled people to handle all types of fires. They also have knowledge of first aid and are able to provide immediate assistance to people suffering from burn injuries or the effects of smoke. The discovery of fire has been a great boon to mankind. Even today Agni is worshiped in many parts of the world. It is a dear friend if we use it properly, but it can be dangerous if it gets out of control.

आग पर काबू रखा जाए तो वह वरदान है लेकिन अगर उस पर काबू पा लिया जाए तो वह खतरनाक हो सकती है। इसका उपयोग हमारे घर में रोजाना खाना पकाने, मोमबत्ती जलाने आदि के लिए किया जाता है, लेकिन अगर यह नियंत्रण से बाहर हो जाए तो यह जीवन, घरों और यहां तक कि जंगलों को भी नुकसान पहुंचा सकता है। आग को जलाने के लिए आवश्यक किन्हीं तीन चीजों को हटाकर आग पर काबू पाया जा सकता है। ईंधन निकालकर इसे तुरंत रोका जा सकता है।

ऑक्सीजन की आपूर्ति में कटौती करके भी आग पर काबू पाया जा सकता है, इसके लिए कई बार जलती हुई वस्तुओं पर कंबल फेंके जाते हैं। दूसरा तरीका फ्लैश तापमान को कम करना है; यह पानी का छिड़काव करके किया जा सकता है जो तापमान को कम करता है। हालाँकि, बिजली की आग या तेल की आग को बुझाने के लिए पानी का उपयोग नहीं किया जा सकता है। बिजली की आग को नियंत्रित करने के लिए कार्बन डाइऑक्साइड बुझाने वाला यंत्र सबसे अच्छा तरीका है।
