Everything I Need to Know I Learned in the Forest by Vandana Shiva Summary in English

Here we have uploaded the Everything I Need to Know I Learned in the Forest by Vandana Shiva Summary in English for students. This will help students to learn quickly in English and English language.

In the first part of the lesson, the author describes how she learned the basic principles of ecology. She says that her study of ecology began in the Himalayan forests because her father was a forest guard. Therefore, she declares that everything she knows about ecology has been learned from the forests and ecosystems of the Himalayas. Incidentally, his mother, who grew up in Lahore (which later became Pakistan) settled in India after Partition and became a farmer.

In the next few paragraphs, she describes the history of the Chipko movement. It was a non-violent response to the massive deforestation taking place in the Himalayan region in the 1970s. In this context Vandana Shiva tells us that her participation in the contemporary ecology movement began with the Chipko movement. During this, farmer women of Garhwal Himalaya were protesting against large-scale felling of trees in defense of forests. This resulted in landslides and floods, shortages of water, fodder and fuel. As a result, women suffered the most as they were responsible for meeting the daily necessities for cooking, washing and other household chores. They had to travel long distances to collect water and firewood which was a heavy burden.

Fortunately, the women realized that the forest was the real source of springs and springs, food for their cattle and fuel for their chulhas. Therefore, the women announced that they would embrace the trees, and the woodcutter would have to kill the trees before they could be killed. He appealed not to chop wood and keep those trees alive.

In 1973 she went to the Himalayas to visit her favorite forests and swim in her favorite stream. She wanted to see these places before going to Canada to pursue her PhD, but there were no forests and a creek was formed. It was during this time that he decided to become a volunteer for the Chipko movement. He spent every holiday on padayatra (pilgrimage walking), documenting deforestation, the work of forest workers and spreading the message of Chipko.

Next, the author narrates the Chipko action that took place in 1977 in the village of Advani in the Himalayas. She recalls how a village woman named Bachni Devi led a movement of resistance against her own husband, who had received a contract to cut trees. When logging officers arrived in the forest, the women were holding lanterns lit despite daylight. The forester advised them saying that they were foolish women and did not know the value of the forest. He said that forests produce profit, resin and wood. The women sang back in the chorus and replied that the forests consist of soil, water and pure air and the earth and everything that she bears.

In the next section titled 'Beyond Monoculture', Vandana Siva tells readers that she learned about biodiversity and bio-diversity-based living economies from the Chipko movement. Furthermore, she remarks that our failure to understand biodiversity and its many functions is the root cause of the impoverishment of nature and culture. She then says that she transferred the lessons she learned about diversity in the Himalayan forests to the conservation of biodiversity in her farms. He started saving seeds from farmers' fields and incidentally realized that he needed a field for demonstration and training. This led to the establishment of Navdanya Farm.

She declares that they now preserve and grow 630 varieties of rice, 150 varieties of wheat and hundreds of other species. She proudly states that they practice and promote a biodiversity intensive form of farming that produces more food and nutrition per acre. In the end, she sees that conservation of biodiversity is, therefore, the answer to the food and nutrition crisis in our country.

Navdanya Sangathan helps farmers transition from fossil-fuel and chemical-based monocultures to bio-diverse ecosystems fed by the sun and soil. He concluded by saying that biodiversity has been his teacher of abundance and freedom, cooperation and mutual giving.

The second part of the text begins with the title 'Nature's Rights on the Global Stage'.
In the first section, she suggests that we accept nature as a teacher and when we do so we co-create with her and also recognize her agency and her rights. Incidentally, she says that Ecuador has recognized the 'rights of nature' in its constitution and calls it an important step. As a sequel, the United Nations General Assembly organized a conference on Harmony with Nature as part of Earth Day celebrations in April 2011. She makes reference to the UN Secretary-General's report 'Harmony with Nature', which was issued in conjunction with the conference. The report highlighted the importance of reconnecting with nature.

Vandana Shiva is of the opinion that separatism is really

Dissonance with nature and the origins of violence against nature and people ed. The authors support his statement by citing the opinion of Cormac Cullinan, a leading environmentalist in South Africa. According to him, "apartheid means segregation". The author says that to end the violent segregation of people on the basis of color, the whole world anti-apartheid movement.

Joined the. Now that apartheid has been left behind in South Africa, we need to address the wider and deeper apartheid – an eco-apartheid based in our minds and lives based on the illusion of being separated from nature as humans.

The author attempts to trace the origin of the idea of alienation. The authors recall our beliefs about the Earth in the pre-industrial era when 'humans' believed that living beings were an inseparable part of nature. But, later with the advent of scientific thinking man came under the illusion that the living earth is dead matter and there is no relation between the living earth and other living beings. Vandana Shiva remarks that the war against Prithvi began at this very moment in history. She observes that the seeds of alienation were sown when the living earth was treated as a dead matter to facilitate the Industrial Revolution.

She says here that monoculture replaced diversity; 'Raw material' and 'dead matter' replaced the living earth. Earth came to be called Terra Nullius, meaning 'empty land', ready for occupation regardless of the fact that Mother Earth (Terra Madre) was home to thousands of indigenous peoples (people of various races, tribes, ethnicities) . ,

Vandana Siva further cited Caroline Merchant, a philosopher and historian, in her support and said that "this shift of perspective from nature as a living, nurturing mother to passive, dead and manipulable matter" is good for those activities. in a way that led to capitalism. Furthermore, Vandana Siva says that the images of the domination of the Earth by scientific methods created by Francis Bacon and other leaders of the Scientific Revolution changed the view that the Earth nurtures life/organisms. He also successfully removed a cultural barrier on the exploitation of nature. Until that time, people did not dare to "easily kill a mother, dig her entrails to sleep, or mutilate her body", as Merchant observed.

It is to be concluded here that once Francis Bacon popularized the idea that the Earth could serve as a source of raw material for scientific experiments, many new scientific discoveries and inventions were made which would later lead to iron, gold, etc. , copper, became the reason for the exploitation of wood. And metals from the earth and the Industrial Revolution, modernization, the development of cities, an increase in the number of wealthy people and urban culture, began to displace other cultures.

In the next section titled 'Prakriti Kya Shiksha Hai', Vandana Shiva tells the reader what we need to do now. She says that we are facing many crises and hence we need to move away from the paradigm of nature as dead matter and move towards the ecological model. Vandana Shiva tells us that in order to understand the meaning of the ecological paradigm, we need to go into 'Prakriti' itself and nature is the best teacher.

Vandana Siva presents a model of the Prithvi University which she says is located in 'Navadanya', a biodiversity farm. She says that Earth University teaches democracy to the earth. Earth embodies the concept of democracy "the freedom of all species to develop within the web of life". It also refers to the freedoms and responsibilities of humans as members of the Earth family to recognize, protect and respect the rights of other species.

Vandana Siva points out that the idea of 'Earth Democracy' is a shift from human-centredism to eco-centrism. Anthropocentrism is a school of thought that argues that man is the central element of the universe. Now we need to accept that 'eco-systems' are the core elements of the universe and not human beings, and the earth nurtures diverse eco-systems. It also means that it is the responsibility of man to preserve these ecosystems. Since we are all dependent on the earth for our existence, earth democracy gives every human being the right of food and water, freedom from hunger and thirst.

Vandana Shiva has mentioned the activities of Navdanya. She says it is a biodiversity farm where participants learn to work with live seeds, live soil and the web of life.

In the next section titled 'The Poetry of the Forest', Vandana Shiva talks about the original source of the idea of 'The Earth University'. She says that the concept of Prithvi University originated from Rabindranath Tagore's Shantiniketan in West Bengal. Tagore started a learning center in the form of a forest school in Shantiniketan, West Bengal. The school became a university in 1921, developing into one of the most renowned education centers in India. Vandana takes this forest school as a model and tells the readers that as in Tagore's time we need to turn to nature and

Jungle for Lessons in Freedom. She then refers to Tagore's essay 'Tapovan' (The Forest of Purity) in which Tagore expresses his understanding of Indian civilization.

Tagore claims that the best ideas of India came from where man was in dialogue with trees and rivers and lakes, away from crowds. He says that the peace of the forest made Manu

Helped in the intellectual development of the Furthermore, he says that the culture that originated from the forest has been influenced by the diverse processes of renewal of life and these processes of renewal of life are always at play in the forest, season to season, sight, sound and smell. This culture of jungle has given air to the culture of Indian society.

Vandana Shiva says that unity in diversity is the basis of both ecological sustainability and democracy. She goes on to say that this is true for both nature and culture, and that we are one with nature through our relationship with the forest.

Vandana Shiva further elaborates on the characteristics of the culture of the forest. She refers to Tagore's writings and says that in her writings the forest was not only a source of wisdom and freedom, but also a source of beauty and joy, art and aesthetics, harmony and perfection. It was a symbol of the universe. Vandana Shiva says that the forest teaches us union and compassion. It also teaches us 'adequacy'. That means, it teaches us the principle of equality. It shows us how to enjoy the gifts of nature without being exploited. Furthermore, she states that no species in a forest takes part of another species and each species maintains itself in cooperation with others. He concluded by saying that the end of consumerism and accumulation is the beginning of the joy of life.

Finally Vandana concludes her article by saying that the struggle between greed and compassion, victory and cooperation, violence and harmony continues even today and in this situation, it is the forest that shows us the way beyond this struggle. could. Thus, Vandana Shiva wants to assure us that forests teach us the values of diversity, freedom and coexistence.
