Dr. Dwarkanath Kotnis was born on October 10, 1910 in a lower middle class family in Sholapur, Maharashtra. Coming from a family of doctors, Dr. Kotnis aspired to become a doctor.

After completing his graduation in medicine, he pursued his postgraduate internship. He started his medical campaign in Vietnam and then moved to Singapore and Brunei. In 1937, Communist General Zhu De requested Jawaharlal Nehru to send Indian doctors to China to help the war victims. Dr. Kotnis was one of the five doctors who were sent to China as part of the Indian medical mission team. Although other doctors returned to India after the war, Dr. Kotnis decided to stay back and serve at the military base. He began his work in Yan'an and then worked as a physician-in-charge in the surgical department of the Eighth Route Army General Hospital. She fell in love with a Chinese nurse, Guo Qinglan, and married her in November 1941. They had a son on August 23, 1942, and they were named Yin Hua. He briefly worked as a lecturer at the Dr. Bethune Hygiene School. He later held the position of the first president of Bethune International Peace Hospital. He operated non-stop for 72 hours without any sleep during the long-standing battle against Japan. He played a major role in controlling a virulent strain of plague affecting Chinese soldiers. He died of epilepsy on December 9, 1942, at the age of 32, and was buried in the Heroes Courtyard, Nanquan Village.

The Chinese government built a memorial hall for him in 1976 in Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province. His grave was completely covered with flowers donated by the Chinese people during the Qingming festival. Both China and India honored him with postage stamps in 1982 and 1983 respectively. Later, the Kotnis family visited Kotnis' grave and the Dr. Bethune International Peace Hospital.

Following the death of Dr. Kotnis, his son Yin Hua also passed away when he was just 25 years old. Despite two premature deaths, Mrs. Kotnis maintained her ties with the Kotnis family. Mrs. Kotnis has been the Guest of Honor at several high-level diplomatic engagements between China and India. She was a regular invitee to the events of the Indian Embassy in China. Publication of 'One Who Never Returned' written by Khwaja Abbas Ahmed and the film 'The Immortal Story of Dr. Kotnis,' directed by V Shantaram. No other Indian can claim the kind of respect and respect that Dr. Dwarkanath Kotnis claims in China. Dr. Kotnis' contribution towards humanity will always be remembered.
