Tradition of giving gallantry awards to children Our first Prime Minister Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru in 1958. On 2 October 1957, Pt. Nehru was watching a demonstration at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi when a fire broke out due to a short circuit in the awning. Harishchandra, a 14-year-old boy, showed his wit and quickly cut the burning Shameena with his knife. This act saved hundreds of lives. Inspired by this gallant act, Pt. Nehru was inspired to start the Bravery Award. Harishchandra was the first recipient of the Bravery Award.
Bravery awards are announced every year on Children's Day (14 November - Chacha Nehru's birthday). The Prime Minister of India presents these awards to the recipients every year on Republic Day. Award winners receive a medal, certificate and cash for their valiant actions.

In 2009, 21 children were honored. Among them was Gaurav Singh Saini, a 13-year-old boy from Haryana. He had saved 50-60 people in a stampede at Naina Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh. Manipur's Miss Maiban Preeti Devi (10 years old) used her bare hands to destroy a live grenade (a small hand-throwing bomb). It was thrown by the terrorists at his mother's shop. This act saved many fives. She aspires to join the police force.
Ten-year-old Priyanshu Joshi from Uttarakhand was awarded for fighting a leopard that attacked his sister on her way to school in 2010. Eleven year old Ginjivan Singh from Punjab was awarded for stopping bank robbery. He attacked the thieves with bricks. When they fired, he ran away. Other people present on the spot managed to nab the thieves. Munis Khan (15) of Madhya Pradesh was awarded for saving an old man from a train accident.

2009 में 21 बच्चों को सम्मानित किया गया। इनमें एक 13 साल का लड़का हरियाणा का गौरव सिंह सैनी भी था। उन्होंने हिमाचल प्रदेश के नैना देवी मंदिर में मची भगदड़ में 50-60 लोगों को बचाया था. मणिपुर की कुमारी माईबन प्रीति देवी (10 साल की) ने अपने नंगे हाथों का इस्तेमाल एक जिंदा ग्रेनेड (हाथ से फेंका एक छोटा बम) को नष्ट करने के लिए किया था। इसे आतंकियों ने उसकी मां की दुकान पर फेंका था। इस अधिनियम ने कई फाइव बचाए। वह पुलिस बल में शामिल होने की इच्छा रखती है।
उत्तराखंड के दस वर्षीय प्रियांशु जोशी को 2010 में स्कूल जाते समय अपनी बहन पर हमला करने वाले तेंदुए से लड़ने के लिए सम्मानित किया गया था। पंजाब के ग्यारह वर्षीय गिंजीवन सिंह को बैंक डकैती रोकने के लिए सम्मानित किया गया। उसने चोरों पर ईंटों से हमला किया था। उन्होंने फायर किया तो वह भाग निकला। मौके पर मौजूद अन्य लोग चोरों को पकड़ने में कामयाब हो गए। मध्य प्रदेश के मुनीस खान (15) को एक वृद्ध व्यक्ति को रेल दुर्घटना से बचाने के लिए सम्मानित किया गया।
